a bit dated but the passion here is timeless

Okay... so call it a classic if you must (as opposed to dated)... no disrespect intended. This author is definitely a pioneer in the genre and has quite a body of work.
Painted Moon was a pretty quick read and I actually thought Warming Trend (one of her more recent books) was far better written. It's from 1994 and follows Jackie (undefined non-butch) and Leah (butch) who bond in the midst of a snow storm that traps them together for days.
Jackie is a kind of doormat to her dumb boyfriend and is waking up to the "glass ceiling" in her career as a female architect... Leah has never outed herself in her art work. It's not that we don't struggle with these issues today... but there is a kind of 1970s vibe here. Or which decade refers to clubs as dances?? Or maybe the 90s were more backwards than I can actually recall, lol... the story felt like a paperback romance. Nothing too deep.
Just when I was trying to figure out why this is a 'must read' in Kallmaker's collection... the passion between these two struck me bigtime. Seriously. It sizzled!! lol. I was truly impressed. There is an unexpected pulse between these two that sincerely captures immobilizing lust. You know... that rare girl and the chemistry you shared that just completely floored you. It's here.
This book is memorable because of the lust. The passion. Primarily... Jackie's. She's not even particularly pretty, but is somehow appealing. Gotta hand it to Kallmaker for that accomplishment. But Leah's artistic expression of her own feelings is truly sweet. For the most part, this isn't more than a 3-star story... but I gave it a 4 for the electricity I experienced here, lol... wow. Frankly, it's a priority for me to find that in my stories. ;)
However, there is something about the snowy setting that adds to the fantasy... love it.
And I'm a little more than biased about the Bay Area setting... it's home. :)
The sex in Warming Trend can't even compare to this... lol. I was wondering if this writer was into the sex after I read Warming Trend. No doubt about that now. Nope. She is more than capable... when she wants to be. :)
Quick and enjoyable little fantasy... definitely put it on your reading list if you are exploring Kallmaker.

disappointing

This book was recommended as "comparing favorably with Katherine Forrest's 'Curious Wine'". I would disagree; the writing does not compare. These characters are not well-developed and some are not even believable. I suppose if the reader is very young or naive she might enjoy this story. I stuck it out, disappointed by the ending.

Hot and cooking

Not only is this a classic Kallmaker book, it is really well done. It has some hot sex and also great cooking:) I use the turkey recipe every Thanksgiving, which then of course prompts me to read the book again...
