Appreciation and how it should be done.

Companion books are an odd duck to write about, and rarer to appreciate. Okay you like George R. R. Martin's ''A Song of ice and Fire'', you write essays online but why should I pay for it. What's the difference between one lengthy post on a forum and works by these fans, except that these latter can organize it by themes and specific ideas, oh and they back it up by research, and they can consolidate their ideas by careful thinking and boil it down to specific essences, oh and they write very well...okay aside from that, what's the difference?

If you are a fan of A Song of Ice and fire and the TV show Game of Thrones, then A Hymn for Spring is an essential book. It broadens and deepens your fondness for the book, introduces a web of connections and allusions to take with you on your next re-read of the books and mostly directs your view to the broad tapestry of George R. R. Martin's richly deconstructive and strongly allusive work of fantasy/alternate history. The essays look at various aspects. Amin Javadi studies the prominent roles music plays in George R. R. Martin's world, Stefan Sasse analyses the character of Ser Barristan, Steven Attewell likewise studies the influence, real and cultural, of Renaissance humanist Niccolo Machiavelli on the overall series, as well as a solidly educational look at how medieval finances actually worked and how its represented here. Alexander Smith, likewise analyses the transition of characters from page to screen.

If I have a quibble its that the books are so vast that these essays feel like mere scratching the surface. It's both too specific and too general. It is also compounded by the fact that the books in question are still not complete and await two volumes, so that can be expected. Still here's hoping there are further volumes which broadens the entire books. I would especially like one studying the innovative dramaturgy in the series, the critique and challenge to "main characters" as opposed to "supporting characters" which is the major achievement of George R. R. Martin's ensemble.

Very Enjoyable Read

I really enjoyed reading the analyses of A Song of Ice and Fire contained in this book. You can tell these writers are huge fans of the series and they all make interesting points in their respective chapters. If you're an obsessed ASOIAF fan who digs into the theories and discussion on Internet forums I really recommend this book.

Decent tactical-level overview and ideas

I was looking for a book on warehouse management before I set about managing a warehouse management IT implementation. This book was a decent overview. I was looking for something a bit more meaty on the strategic side. If you are looking at the tactical level of warehouse management then this book is for you.

If you have other warehouse management books then you probably won't find anything new in this one. This would make a good first book on the topic.

Pricey, short but very informative

At 99 pages and $35US (at time of review), the book doesnt come cheap. Thats the negative.

However if you are seeking quality over quantity and want a work where the bulk of the information is drawn from first hand accounts, as opposed to suppositions and conjectures by present day historicans then this is a fine work.

Chapter names are: (1) War (2) Feasting (3) Poetry (4) Religion (5) The Western Isles (6) The Ancient Celts Speak. The first 5 are self explanatory but the last is less so. The last chapter is basically overturning the old view that Druids left no written records due to their forbading any sacred text as well as the notion that Classical Celts were illiterate. Through inscriptions carved into stone or tablets of various material the author conveys some interesting points about Celtic life and practices, particuarly superstition and religion.

Its full of little gems, such as first hand accounts of human sacrifice. Usually a poor criminal was chosen. The unlucky person could be kept imprisoned for 5 years before being impaled on a pole in honor of the gods. If that wasnt enough of an indignity he/she was then tossed onto a bonfire. Then there was the Celtic habit of proudly displaying the severed heads of tribal foes in their Gallic homes that was only brought to an end by Roman rule. If that doesnt wet the appetite you get to learn about funeral rites where once tradition dictated even beloved subordinates of the deceased may be thrown into the fire to appease the Gods (hence unpopularity and a high rank were truly worthy attributes to aspire to). It was also a requirement at council meetings that a bard be present for it appears that only the soothing music of bard could keep tempers under control. As one turns the pages, so much more one learns that both shocks and enlightens the senses.

All up these images of Celtic culture above are probably not ones that readily come to mind. But they are just as much a part of Celtic society as the admirable art and craft works, peaceful images of druids wandering around prosperous villages or warriors just fending off enemies.

All up, it makes for a nice informative and lucid read about all facets of Celtic life from across the regions of Gaul, Britian and Ireland. Now if only they could make is more accessible by significantly lowering the price to match the size - it would be just perfect.

Freeman Gives a Full Picture of Celtic Europe

Through descriptions left by classical writers and historians, Freeman pieces together the culture of the Celts in Europe. The first chapter, "War," tells of Celtic tactics, weapons, and strategy. Aristotle describes Celtic warriors as "being absolutely without fear" (2). Freeman inserts accounts of different Celtic tribes across Europe, including Gaul and the northern Balkans. He also makes note of the separation between mainland Celts and those in the Western Isles, Britain and Ireland.
The next chapter, "Feasting," describes Celtic banquets, as well as their love of wine. Phylarchus of Athens gives a vivid picture of a year-long feast offered by the Celt Ariamanes. Ariamanes divided up his country (location unnamed) and set up banquet halls at specific stopping points along the road.
Celtic culture is also well-known for its poets and bards. Celts used an oral tradition, rather than writing. Keeping track of stories, history, and genealogies in their memories was key. Greek writers noted the importance of bards in Celtic society, and understood the spoken word held more power than the written. In the second century, Greek writer Lucian converses with a Celt after observing a picture of the Celtic god Ogmios. The Celt tells him, "...the arrows in his quiver represent words - sharp, fast and hitting the target - which pierce the spirit of the listener" (32).
War, Religion, and Celtic Women
Caesar's Gallic War provides much of what is known about Celtic religion and the role of Druids in their society. Freeman dedicates over two pages of this chapter to Caesar's description which proves invaluable. Caesar notes what is perhaps one of the core beliefs that "the cardinal teaching of the Druids is that the soul does not perish, but after death, passes from one body to another" (42). In exploring the role of women in Celtic society, Freeman makes clear that the idea of ancient Celtic equality is "a romantic view not supported in the classical sources" (53). Though women may have fought alongside men in battle,or even led their warriors such as Boudicca, their world was still male dominated.
Though classical writers may have had biases against the Celts, most accounts presented by Freeman seem factual and objective. Tacitus, Julius Caesar, and Aristotle are just a few of the eyewitnesses to ancient Celtic life.

excellent example of the essay form

Didion's collection of essays was recommended to me by writing instructors as an example of excellent essay writing. I found it to be just that. In the first third, she writes a series of remarkable essays about California in the late 1960s. The middle third contains personal essays. And the book finishes with a collection of essays about different places she's been - New York, Hartford, Hawaii, Sacramento.

What makes her writing most impressive is her masterful presentation of portraits, inserting herself just occasionally to remind the reader of who the photographer was, to inject humanity. She does an excellent job combining place and character and shows that long sentences can work. This book is useful both an as example to those who aspire to writing better essays and as a memorable voice from the 1960s.

Typical Kelly...

I have read numerous Cathy Kelly novels, and this does not disappoint in following her typical recipe. That does not make it any less good or worth reading, but it is starting to indicate to me that it may be time for a change. All of her books center around a group of women with different issues (in Past Secrets everyone has some sort of secret) that are somehow either strongly connected at the beginning or will be by the end. This was an entertaining book, with good characters that were all more or less likeable, even if you wanted to kick some of them for their stupidity at times. It was, however, very predictable. I do want to stress that in spite of its predictability, it is still good book, and fun to read. It isn't Kelly's best effort in my opinion, but if you know what you are getting into, you will not be disappointed - it is a solid story.

Good Secrets

I love Cathy Kelly's books and I was so excited to see a new one. The four main characters all had something to hide from the ones they loved and had to overcome them in order to be happy and move on. As the story unfolds you learn of each secret and how it affects the lives of the four women. Although, none of the secrets are anything as horrible as you're led to believe. It's a really cute summer book with interesting characters and a good storyline. I can't wait for more!
