A Must Read For Every starting researcher in accounting

In eleven chapter and 241 pages, Malcolm Smith aims to provide an insider's view of the research process, by focusing on actual choices made in the conduct of accounting research projects, together with a realistic perception of what might go wrong, even with careful planning. The overall aim of the book is to facilitate the conduct of applied research studies in accounting. It takes a practical approach which takes the reader from initiating of the research idea, over developing the conceptual model, identifying theory and literature, developing a specification of hypotheses and collecting and analyzing to the ultimately publishing of the research findings.

The clearly defined structure and smooth writing style help to convey the message. It is furthermore very accessible due to its broad perspective and practical approach. The reader gets a clear overview of the sequence of steps that need to be undertaken to come to a successful publication. Throughout the book, he is made aware of potential pitfalls that he may encounter, and to some extent how to solve them. Practical examples illustrate the theory, making the whole more understandable. The main contribution the book makes to the reader is that it shows how to identify and define research problems and prepare strategies for their solution, how to review existing research and how to offer critiques of articles. In addition, ethical constraints on the conduct of accounting research are discussed.

There are however some drawbacks. A choice had to be made between a broad, extensive perspective and a detailed, intensive perspective. The author discusses for example the most frequently used statistical techniques, without really discussing solutions to statistical problems that may occur. Hence, the book may serve as a guideline to (starting) researchers, clarifying the several steps that need to be undertaken. Other, more specific, literature will however be needed to solve problem to concrete problems.

An Inspiration

Destiny Bridge is an amazing account of the life of Frank Worthen (the father of the almost 40-year-old "ex-gay" movement/ Exodus International) and God's deep love and concern for those who struggle with same-sex attraction.

The first half of the book recounts Frank's heart-wrenching childhood, deception from his own pastor, and subsequent 20 years living as a gay man in homosexual relationships. The second half of the book recounts God's intervention on the Golden Gate Bridge and Frank's humble acceptance of Christ's love and forgiveness, which changed the course of his life an the lives of thousands of men and women who have turned from homosexuality to holiness.

The author takes time to share details, which makes reading Destiny Bridge like reading an historic novel. Much more than a novel, however, this true story is filled throughout with examples of God's grace and provision, offering a hope that no work of fiction could produce.

Frank recounts his role in the birth and growth of the "ex-gay" movement, which began in the 70's and continues to this day. His honest description of the movement's successes, failures, and hardships paints a realist picture of the fledging movement, which has strengthened and grown over the last 35 years. Frank's unswerving dedication to the ministry in the US and abroad, the international scope of outreach, the danger and confrontation he and others experienced and overcame is exciting and inspiring.

Finally some of the funniest and most endearing moments in the book are when Frank describes his courtship and marriage to his beloved Anita. The description of their love for each other and their mutual dedication to helping others as they work together in ministry is the "icing" on the very satisfying "cake" of Destiny Bridge.

This book will touch your heart, challenge your assumptions, uplift your spirits, and remind you of how great God's love is for every one of us.

As Jesus said of Nathaniel, Frank Worthen is a man without guile

Frank Worthen is a guileless, gentle, generous, Godly man whose goal is to give his life in submission to God's gentle leading. Toward this goal he has aimed for 80-plus years. This book is his account of that journey.

In Spring of 1974, a small personal ad appeared in Christianity Today offering a "Brother Frank" tape with his testimony up to that point. Buying that tape was my first contact with Frank. My most recent contact was a year ago. I was videographer for his friend Alan Medinger's funeral. Frank was not able to attend. I sent Frank a DVD of the event. Between those two times we only met at annual conferences, both being active in the Exodus movement that Frank helped to found. Add "visionary" to my list of qualities. What Frank said always agreed with how he behaved. Add "integrity" to my list.

All of that could make a boring book if it weren't for the fact that Frank's path to his goal had twists and turns in and out of family heartbreaks, gay relationships, bankruptcy, disloyalty, church splits, and life-threatening adventures. If you're looking for lurid details, skip this account. Frank is always tasteful, even while being ... er ... frank.

Frank avoids a preachy, moralizing tone. The most indisputable truth is lived truth. In this account, we watch Frank mature in Christ-likeness, from "perceived rejection" (275) to strong leadership.

Self-published, this book will never make a splash in the marketplace. But Frank's servant heart has enriched the church universal, and will repay your taking the time to read it.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant.

You will not find this book up at your local B&N bookstore.

Rather than be disappointed, I am actually glad. I feel that anyone who gets rewarded with a treasure like this ought to have looked around or taken a little effort to know of its existence before they laid their hands on it!!!

I can't stop gushing about how good Coakley's books are for players ramping up to an intermediate level and want to be absolutely sure they have no holes in their chess knowledge. (I'm about USCF 1579 at the time of writing this and I feel that the exercise positions in this book have so much to offer me.)

The delivery of exercises ( 9 per page ) and the quality of the answers at the back are very impressive. A tactics book that has non "find the mate or find the best move to win" positions is a rarity these days.

His Number 9 position on each page offers a wealth of instruction if you haven't seen those positions before. I've even started to document those in my own training notes, as positions that I should know COLD in order to be competitive at my level.

Overall, one of the finest tactics+non-tactics exercise books I've seen.

Chess Tactics

The main part of this book consists of 100 pages of exercises with nine diagrams on each page. Three diagrams are devoted to checkmate problems; three are win material type of problems; one is a defensive problem ("White to move and not lose"); one problem is more general; and one problem is an endgame problem. The solutions are in the back of the book and are very detailed. They often give not only the winning line, but also the reason why other moves don't work. As a chess coach, I've looked at a large number of books which teach tactics, IMO this is perhaps the best I've seen for students

Superior Instruction for Lower Rated Players

This is part of an excellent series by Canadian chess instructor Coakley. This book contains tactics at a level that many lower rated players never master. You need to be able to SEE relatively simple tactics almost instantly at the board, and better yet, you need to see the possibility of those tactics before they occur. This book will help you with its well chosen examples and fine explanations. As a bonus, you get problems on strategy, defense, and endgames. The breakdown by category is 300 checkmates, 300 'win material' problems, and 100 each of strategy, defense, and endgame problems, all with insightful and detailed answers. If you are a relative novice, or if you are that typical adult player stuck for years (or decades!) in that 1200-1500 USCF range, serious study of this book could give your rating a real boost! Highly recommended.

We Need More People Emphasizing this Subject

One of the things I have felt strongly about is that in the days we live in, there will be an intensified war over the subject of the goodness of God. Those outside the church will question his goodness outright, while many within the body of Christ will question God's goodness in subtle ways.

Many Christians have hit deep disappoints, so messages that help point us back to the divine goodness of our Father is incredibly important. This book has many nuggets that cause me to underline them and ponder them over and over. Bill has great perspectives that make you think and rethink.

I wish at times that Bill Johnson would dig into some of the more difficult Scriptures that people get confused with, like the book of Job, but it's clear that dissecting those subjects in a deep manner is not what forms his unique identity and calling. In addition, his simplicity on how he sees things can be very refreshing. I am learning more and more that knowledge can just puff us up if its not connected to heart experience. In addition, our desire for depth in theology can remove a child like faith that embraces mystery but pursues more relentlessly.

I appreciate Bill's focus to trust no matter what and keep his eyes fixed on God's goodness. It is an example for all of us.

This book will challenge those who do not think healing is for today or those who have given up on growing in healing. It is certainly a challenge to live a life that believes in the miraculous. But it must have a premise that lives in the eternal goodness of our Father.

Here are some thoughts that I highlighted and am pondering:

Saying God allowed a terrible thing to happen is pretty much the same as saying He caused it.
"It's not the belief in His goodness that threatens us. It's our definition of this goodness that has brought much debate and sometimes conflict and turmoil into the family of God." (p. 32)
"Creating doctrines of no miracles today not only contradicts His Word, it is a sneaky way to avoid responsibility." (p. 32)
His brief teaching on Ephesians 3:20-21 is insightful on the power of our prayers and the impact of our imagination in relating to God.
"We will know our mind is renewed when the impossible looks logical." (p. 38)
I was challenged when he addressed how the church pushes most great promises in Scripture to the millennium, removing us from experiencing great manifestations of the kingdom right now.
"God's people are to be known for their hope." (p. 98)
"The one with the most hope will always have the most influence." (p. 99)
Speaking to today's culture, he says, "unsanctified mercy has taken the place of true mercy." (p. 107)
The church experiencing many parallels that Israel faced in the dessert was very spot on.
One of the best quotes I pull from this book is one that resonates with my heart to see God restore our relationship capacity in the church:

"It's a Father's kingdom. In other words, all conversation about kingdom is about family. And once we've left the subject of family, we've left the subject of kingdom." (p. 164)

"It's a theological crime to change the intent and message of the Scriptures in order to make me feel comfortable with my ministry experience." (p. 170)
"What we don't know is sometimes as important as what we do know." (p. 187)
Bill Johnson mentions his father getting cancer and passing away, a story that brings me to tears every time I read or hear it. How Bill and the rest of his family responded to that sickness and loss is an incredible testimony of engaging God's goodness in the midst of it being challenged in what you see.

I've been challenged to my core regarding the goodness of God, in many situations and trials that have come in my life. Some challenges have gripped me so deep I wasn't sure I could make it. But leaning deeply into the simplicity that God is good and the devil is bad, has anchored me to a deeper trust. I don't blame Him or claim Him in regard to the storms in my life, but I look to use everything that happens in my life for God's glory. I appreciate that Bill is living a life that dwells in God's goodness, takes responsibility to spread that goodness, while undoing the works of the devil all around the world.

This was probably the most timely read of my life. I grew up being told that God was Good but taught that He caused bad things to happen including sickness and disease as a way to force people toward serving Him. I would often cringe at the idea but had no solid reasoning as to why this theology never sat right in my spirit. Thank You Jesus for speaking through Your servant. Thank you Pastor Bill for your obedience to the voice of The Lord in this work. I personally know a whole fellowship of ministers who will receive my recommendation of this book. God is Awesome.

Another winner from Father bailey.

Another wonderful tale from Father Bailey. Having read all the author's previous novels I was delighted when this became available, I'm an old-school chap who prefers tactile books however I succumbed on this occasion and joined the Kindleites as I could not wait to read. I was not disappointed, this new offering is a deeply spiritual reflection on sainthood and what in essence it means to be human. I recommend this highly and must again congratulate the author.

A wonderful read

I would usually avoid the 'Christian fiction' genre, though thought i'd give this a try - it's brilliant

The story follows a young couple couple over a number of years and describes their encounters with an orthodox monk

Apart from its gripping storyline, this book helps us get to know god better and deeper

Challenging, profound, wholesome and healing I highly recommend fire on the Lips - You will Love it!

Purer, simpler, stronger.

Fr Spyridon addresses the issues of spiritual awakening through a warm and accessibly written story. Although he deals with the most profound precepts in the Orthodox Canon, Fr Spyridon never forgets his own ,or his reader's, humanity.The consequences of his central character's struggle with the transformative process are portrayed in the context of his earthly relationships , his hopes and dreams for himself and his family and his understanding of himself in relation to God. I feel that the dissatisfaction and frustration with which the characters come to view their 'default' Churches will strike a chord with anyone who has felt a yearning for a purer, simpler spirituality, as taught in the times before the Church was torn apart by schisms and political machinations. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to develop their understanding of the Orthodox Church and to deepen their relationship with the divine.

My son is 10 years old and loves this book. I read some of it too and it is so interesting that I could not put it down. It is hardcover and it came with a cd also.

Disjointed, but kids will love it

For those who are new to the Eyewitness format, it consists of thematically arranged two-page spreads of brilliant photographs on a white background. There is an intro paragraph in the upper left-hand corner, but most of the text is in the captions that go with the photographs. Generally, the biological sciences titles are the strongest in this series, since other topics often need a more organized progression of topics. You'll get a lot of information out of these books, but you won't get a systematic anaylsis.

This is a decent addition to the series. The information is rather dated, and this entry particularly suffers from the bite-sized, disconnected spreads that are arranged thematically rather than progressively or chronologically. However, the spreads themselves have a very high "cool" factor and are interesting and are coherent within themselves. Though practical use is limited, any child who loves spies or James Bond will adore this book.
