Must-Have Book

I recently gave in to the inevitable and upgraded from Photoshop Elements (PSE) to Photoshop CC (cloud version). I learned Elements using Scott Kelby's then-current book and have used his books to learn each subsequent PSE release. If you're just starting with Photoshop, Scott's books are a great way to learn. When upgrading from prior PSE releases, I've used Scott's books as not just a way to learn new features, but as a complete refresher course on everything Photoshop can do. (That said, the one improvement I can suggest is a summary or index of new features.) I especially like the way Scott not just explains each feature, but tells the reader how HE uses it (or doesn't use it, but rather uses some other feature or technique instead). He also does a great job of teach workflow: which Photoshop tools to use in what sequence; and you get to practice what he's showing you using the exact same images he's using in the book (Scott provides link to download site). Scott has the gift of being a really good teacher, I love all his books, will buy more in the future, gladly recommend to others.

Ok or Excellent: depends entirely upon your needs

I'm a real fan of Scott Kelby, having purchased numerous of his books and also subscribing to KelbyOne.com. I guess if you only use PS this is an excellent book. However, like numerous photographers, I have access to Lightroom and Photoshop CC (Adobe Photographer's bundle) and was hoping to use this book to not only learn to use PS but also to fully integrate it into my workflow.

Even if the title of this book is "PS .. for Photographers", I'll bet there are numerous photographers who want to not only learn PS but also to integrate it in their workflow with LR (cataloguing in LR and using LRs Develop module) before moving to PS for more post-processing. If, like me, you are one of them, I'd hold off on buying this book. Conversely, if you plan on only using PS this book is definitely a 5 star book and on par with the rest of Scott's excellent books (and videos); buy it now!

As always, another well written guide for photographers giving them the information they need to successfully edit their photos in Photoshop. Scott writes in a style that is easy to follow without complicating the techniques, and best of all, makes the material readily searchable so you can jump to whatever topic you need help with.

Many noteworthy advances in our knowledge of the pericardium, its functions and diseases and their relation to heart failure have been made since the first edition of this book appeared in 1981; and no other book that covers in detail the physiology and pathophysiology has since been published. The first edition was favourably received, and I have frequently been asked to write a new edition. My own knowledge in the years that have passed since then, and my clinical and research experience in the field of the subject have both increased. For all these reasons, I decided that the second edition was overdue. The long time that has elapsed between editions necessitated rewriting, rather than simply revising, most of the text. For the same reason, many of the figures are new. Most of the references I have cited appeared in the literature after 1981, but I have retained a number of earlier ones, either because they are classics or, in my opinion, have not yet been bettered. It is my hope that the new edition will be a useful resource for clinicians called upon to manage patients with pericardial disease and for physiologists when the pericardium is relevant to their investigations. I make no apology for the in-depth treatment of the pericardial physiology and pathophysiology throughout the book, for they are the foundation on which diagnosis, hemodynamic and imaging studies, and management must rest.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
This book will go a long way toward redressing the widespread ignorance of the clinical and functional significance of the pericardium. The author, a master physiologist-cum-clinician in the mold of Louis Katz and William Dock, has produced a treasure trove of facts and personal insights, with many historical excursions and interpolations, to illuminate the state of the art and the state of the science. In keeping with his personal interests, the book is asymmetric: 62 pages (almost one fifth of the text) cover constrictive pericarditis; chapter 2, "Physiology," covers 54 pages; pulsus paradoxus gets 28 pages. Most of the text on common forms of acute pericarditis is highly concentrated at the end of the book; the author dismisses inclusive diagnostic lists as being of more interest to the epidemiologist than to the practitioner. Unfortunately, an overwhelming number of patients qualify for a diagnosis of acute pericarditis under "idiopathic" rubrics, which undoubtedly mask cases of uncommon causes that would not come to mind without the aid of checklists. (For example, pericarditis occurs in more than 30 individual entities in the vasculitis-connective-tissue disease group alone.) (Figure) Some of the most fascinating reading concerns the author's personal experiences in the experimental laboratory, where he elucidated conditions that permit pulsus paradoxus, and in a fascinating section, "Comparative Physiology," that describes his work on the pericardium of the elasmobranch fish, which, despite the presence of a pericardioperitoneal canal, can support tamponade. Equally interesting is the analysis of pericardial pressure as measured by the tip of a catheter, versus the nonuniform, pericardial contact force as measured by flat balloon, and the consequences of the former procedure for cardiac physiology, especially preload and true cardiac filling (i.e., distending, or transmural) pressures. Chapter 3 is an almost chatty practical guide to the identification, almost exclusively by echocardiography, of the presence and management of pericardial effusion. The 12-page section on techniques for imaging pericardial effusions is outstanding. Chapter 5, "Pericardiocentesis," comprises 21 pages that are packed with practical how-to information and illuminated by the author's personal insights; this chapter also describes pericardioscopy and balloon pericardiotomy. Elsewhere, devices for myocardial support are mentioned, principally the acorn jacket, which is designed to act like the pericardium -- it is more compliant in the long axis than in the short axis -- to support the myocardium during cardiac failure. There is also a concise discussion of the uses of pericardial tissue for the construction of bioprostheses. The book has a few weaknesses, although certainly none in its factual material, its functional analyses, or its literary standards. The categorical title, The Pericardium, seems to promise comprehensive, if not encyclopedic, coverage. (The author may know that certain panjandrums of cardiology inveigh against "encyclopedic" inclusiveness.) Yet, except for fluid components, there is surprisingly little mention of the rich microphysiology of the pericardium. It is a veritable biochemical factory integrated with a complex autonomic-nerve supply, and this makes it particularly strange to some of us that so many patients seem unharmed by pericardiectomy. Perhaps such patients are either not followed long enough or not followed for the critical information. The index of the book is relatively anemic, with some topics not included even though they are well covered in the text, and a few topics, such as Dressler's syndrome, are indexed to the wrong pages. These drawbacks, even the near-absence of the subject of pericardial microphysiology, pale beside the excellence of the areas that are covered and the particular asset of this text: the author writes so well that one wishes the book were longer and included subjects that have been omitted or only lightly touched on. For example, one cannot improve on Shabetai's description of the pericardium as "beautifully designed for the normal heart and [for] cop[ing] nicely with early stages of chronic heart failure. In severe or acute heart failure, the pericardium is an obstacle to maintaining a normal or compensated hemodynamic status." The high standard of narration, as expected of a Briton (Shabetai is from Manchester), makes almost every page a delightful read. Many physicians, particularly cardiologists and physiologists, who pick up the book for spot reading are sure to acquire one or more copies. This book is a sea story about a U.S. Navy destroyer and her crew. The author served on this ship, the USS Brush (DD745), for 3 years and 2 months in the early 1950's. Life on the Brush involved a lot of sea duty. She spent most of this time at sea either conducting training exercises off the coast of California or steaming around somewhere in the Far east. The Brush made 3 seven month cruises to the Orient while the author was aboard her. The main objective of this book, and the reason for writing it, was to tell about what the crew of the Brush experienced on these 3 cruises. The first cruise was made in early 1953. The Brush was sent to the Korean War theatre and spent several months there doing what destroyers do during war time. The men experienced things off North Korea that they will never forget. In addition to the Korean Patrol, the Brush participated in the Formosa Patrol for a month or so and went to the island city of Hong Kong while she was down that way. The second cruise was made in May, 1954. On this cruise, the brush spent most of her time in the South China Sea, Formosa Strait, and in the Sea of Japan. The Brush commenced the third cruise in June, 1955. This was more of a peace time cruise and we never had to go into harm's way. Although, the author had a number of interesting personal experiences which he wrote about.

Bought It Used, Found It Had Been Signed By The Author To Another Former Shipmate

A good read. I served on board in 1969, long after Ted Holly. Also two other friends that I met later in life also served on the Brush about the time of Ted's story and even saw a photo of one (of course lots younger in the early 50's). Lot's of details, brought back memories of how complex the jobs were back in the day. Service on a World War II era ship cannot be measured against a current DDG...........the new one's would have be cruisers back in the day. Want to know what it was like 50 years ago. READ THIS BOOK!

Probably old salts only....

This is a story told by a very narrow minded individual who doesn't mind displaying his prejudices for the world to see. Guess some tend to get that way as they age. The story is told essentially out of the ship's log, in that language, with a few of the above observances and the authors family background thrown in to soften that informative but bland story line. That said, I was an old Sumner tin can sailor as well with two years eight months aboard. I loved my time in, including that taken in harms way and loved that old boat with a depth of feeling only an old tin can sailor can and it brought back many memories, mostly good to this old heathen. Probably can only be read by a person with a tin can service background or an historian but I'm glad I spent the time because of those memories it elicited.

About the Author
Xiaodong Dai is Associate Professor of the Foreign Languages College of Shanghai Normal University, P. R. China. He is a Fulbrighter and serves as the Vice President of China Association for Intercultural Communication (CAFIC). His research interests include identity negotiation, intercultural communication competence and intercultural dialogue. His most recent books are Identity and Intercultural Communication: Theoretical and Contextual Construction (co-edited with Steve J. Kulich), Intercultural Communication Theories, and Intercultural Adaptation: Theoretical Explorations and Empirical Studies (co-edited with Steve J. Kulich). Guo-Ming Chen is Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island. He is the Executive Director of the International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies and the co-editor of China Media Research. His primary research interests are in intercultural/organizational/global communication. Chen has published numerous papers and books, including Foundations of Intercultural Communication, A Study of Intercultural Communication Competence, Communication and Global Society, and Theories and Principles of Chinese Communication.

Used every day

I am an urgent care physician and have been using an earlier edition and now this edition in my practice. I use it for teaching both students and residents who rotate with me, and often will use it with patients to illustrate why I do (or don't) think their rash is what they think it is. My older edition has started to fall apart and luckily a new edition was available. I have learned so much from the text and feel very confident in my dermatology diagnosis and treatments. I have used other references, but I always come back to my Habif for confirmation. It clearly is the best reference.

Great reference but also written for students.

I got this as a reference book to keep around but before doing my 4th year Derm rotation opened it up and found that it has a nice preface for how a medical student can use it to get up to speed on dermatology. I've only read the first few chapters but it's readable as a text as well as being a well known reference book. They added two chapters in this edition at the beginning that help you to make a differential diagnosis based on the type of lesion and the location.

This reference is easy to use and very informative. Unfortunately, media rights were not granted for many of the figures in the Kindle version so essential information was unexpectedly missing. Be careful when buying this book on Kindle.

The title is accurate

The book is entitled Opthalmic diseases in Vet med and that is all it is. The photos are good, but do not expect any treatment options or surgical interventions. The book was recommended by our closest opthalmologist. Perhaps I expected more. I need a book that helps me diagnose and treat. I would like to have some better outline of what are the best treatments that the author would recommend, as he is an expert in the field.

Required book for ophthalmology, made necessary by the fact that professor's notes are not complete or that test answers are explicitly only in this. I thought the Kindle version would be useful especially for using Ctrl+F for specific concepts, but the search function is a nightmare - it will bring up every mention of that word without giving you any sense of where you are in the book/whether you're in the relevant section to do actual reading about said concept. While the organization of the book feels pretty standard, I really don't feel it's useful, and a good bit of useful information is missing. Several words, concepts, and treatments I searched that easily should have been included in any ophtho text weren't even present. Management of emergency conditions was lacking, too. I'm still feeling pretty helpless about ophtho after using this for a couple months. Another review mentions not expecting interventions or treatments - as a veterinary student, I definitely DO expect this in a text for a course systems class, and you should too. Too bad it's too late to return!

Loaded with info but makes a few incorrect assumptions

Tourniaire and Farrell do an **excellent** job of discussing the various aspects of software support. However, they make many assumptions that every company functions the exact same way. Coming from the support department of a major software vendor, most of what they talk about is geared to that business. Therefore, a great deal of what they say does not apply to internal help desks.
Having both been on the phones and managed software hotlines **and** internal help desks for the past 15 years, I know there is no one way to run a hotline/help desk that applies in every case. You need to take the information they provide and weigh it against your own experiences and the way your company works in order to get the best out of the book. However, the book does address the pros and cons of various approaches which is more than many other books do.
What is missing is a more detailed treatment of call management (the actual work on the phone) and not problem management (the handling of the customer's problem). Therefore, check out Call Center Management on Fast Forward, by Brad Cleveland.
If the book had been more open to the possibility that not all companies are the same, I would have given it the full five stars. However, this is still one of the very best books on the market and I would still recommend this book highly.

Great for Call Centers and Internal IT Tier-2

This book is aimed at software product support specialists working for software vendors, but is also applicable to internal IT tier-2 support specialists (application support analysts). Some of the information contained in this book will give internal IT help desks ideas on customer satisfaction, support models and help desk management. However, this is not the book's primary audience.
My review is from the viewpoint of an IT service delivery specialist. Product support specialists will have a different, but loosely related, set of requirements.
The theme of this book is achieving customer satisfaction. This surfaces early in the book and recurs throughout. Since customer satisfaction is the foundation of support, regardless of from whom of where it is delivered, I found this to be one of the highlights of the book.
Call management models outlined by the authors were valuable to me, and I found myself writing notes in the margins and highlighting paragraphs. I skimmed call management implementation because it is outside of the scope of my speciality, but did note that this information would be of interest by anyone who is setting up an internal IT help desk. It goes without saying that this material will be of keen interest to product support organizations that are setting up a call center. One nice touch here is the advice on disaster recovery planning - this is too often overlooked by all organizations and showed the attention to detail that the authors gave when writing this book.
The discussions on packaging support programs and product call center support organizations gave me insights into the challenges faced by software vendors. These insights have armed me with information from which to craft an approach to effectively deal with vendors who are typically at tier-3 from an internal IT point of view. Another section that I found particularly useful covered managing software bugs and code fixes. This material is directly applicable to internal IT tier-2 support, regardless of whether they are dealing with internal developers or outside vendors. There are some gaps here, though. For example, I would have liked a discussion on configuration control boards, prioritization of fixes and enhancements, and configuration and change management. These subjects are important to software vendor product support organizations and internal IT tier-2 folks.
This book also provides sound advice on selecting, justifying and implementing call center tools. Some of these tools are specific to product support call centers (and to an extent, internal IT help desks), such as phone systems and knowledge bases. Other tools, such as bug tracking and problem reproduction environments, are useful to IT tier-2 specialists as they are to call centers.
I found some of the appendices to be especially valuable: Appendix C, determining staff levels, and D, creating and justifying a support center budget, were excellent reading that added to my own professional knowledge.
Overall this is a valuable book that has multiple audiences. Aside from the gaps I mentioned above, I think this book needs to be updated to reflect the growing requirement for e-support. While I was tempted to give 4 stars based on the noted shortcomings, this book is so thorough and rich with ideas and advice that it deserves 5 stars. I only hope that the authors update this book with a second edition that addresses current realities of software support.

Fantastic source of guidance for providing software support.

I'm am (slowly) reading this tremendous wealth of information in order to ponder and absorb as much as possible. So far, it's been like gold to me.
I manage a support organization for a US$40M/yr engineering software company and the advice and guidance found in this book is extremely practical and applicable to what I do every day. It's been helpful in the way it presents several options and objectively weighs the PROs and CONs of each. This has provided a good "sanity check" to confirm that many of my initiatives to-date are sound. It has also suggested practices I had not previously considered, but which make so much sense now that I've read and thought about them. I have already started to implement several such practices to improve my support organization and my staff is ecstatic. Finally, there are some useful tidbits that I cannot act on at this time, but which I will come back to later as we continue to grow and expand our business. I am sure to refer back to this insightful and well-written piece over and over again in the months and years to come.
If you manage or direct a software support group, this book will help you put in place the processes you need to provide effective and cost-efficient customer support. And if you help staff a support group, this book will get you noticed by giving you a lot of great ideas to propose to the boss and perhaps make that move to the next level along your career growth path.
I would definitely buy this book again and highly recommend it.
