Frog in the Well is a vivid and revealing account of Watanabe Kazan, one of the most important intellectuals of the late Tokugawa period. From his impoverished upbringing to his tragic suicide in exile, Kazan's life and work reflected a turbulent period in Japan's history. He was a famous artist, a Confucian scholar, a student of Western culture, a samurai, and a critic of the shogunate who, nevertheless, felt compelled to kill himself for fear that he had caused his lord anxiety.

During this period, a typical Japanese scholar or artist refused to acknowledge the outside world, much like a "frog in the well that knows nothing of the ocean," but Kazan actively sought out Western learning. He appreciated European civilization and bought every scrap of European art that was available in Japan. He became a painter to help his family out of poverty and, by employing the artistic techniques of the West, achieved great success with his realistic and stylistically advanced portraits.

Although he remained a nationalist committed to the old ways, Kazan called on the shogunate to learn from the West or risk disaster. He strove to improve the agricultural and economic conditions of his province and reinforce its defenses, but his criticisms and warnings about possible coastal invasions ultimately led to his arrest and exile.

Frog in the Well is the first full-length biography of Kazan in English, and, in telling his life's story, renowned scholar Donald Keene paints a fascinating portrait of the social and intellectual milieus of the late Tokugawa period. Richly illustrated with Kazan's paintings, Frog in the Well illuminates a life that is emblematic of the cultural crises affecting Japan in the years before revolution.

About the Author
John P. Irish received his B.A. in philosophy and political science from Southern Methodist University, his M.A. in philosophy from the University of Arkansas, and a M.L.S. in American Studies from Southern Methodist University. He is currently working on his Doctorate in Humanities from SMU. He has been teaching U.S. History for over 15 years. He currently teaches AP U.S. History at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas, where he coaches the UIL Social Studies Team and is the UIL Academic Coordinator.

Edward Carson received his B.A. in History and M.Ed. in History Education from Harding University. His current research examines race, religion, and society, particularly that of W.E.B. Du Bois. He does editorial work for The Christian Century Magazine Then and Now, and sits on the Christian Scholars' Conference Committee. He is a residential faculty member in the History Department at Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Historical Thinking Skills Practice at Your Fingertips!

This is a fantastic resource! I've been teaching AP European History for many years now, but with the redesign going into effect this year, I've felt like a first year teacher in many ways. I just received this book this past week and already I feel that it is going to greatly benefit my students this year and for many years to come. If you want to be able to effectively teach your students how to think like a historian and do the work of a historian, you need this book! It's great practice for students doing the work of historians and is fantastic in helping them develop the skills they need to be successfull on the new AP European History exam.

David E. Long is a consultant on the Middle East and counterterrorism. He is retired from the U.S. Foreign Service and has taught and lectured extensively on Middle Eastern subjects. He is the author of The United States and Saudi Arabia: Ambivalent Allies (Westview, 1985) and The Anatomy of Terrorism (1990). Bernard Reichis Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He is a member of the Board of Advisory Editors of the Middle East Journal and of the International Editorial Board of Israel Affairs. He is the author of Quest for Peace: United States-Israel Relations and the Arab-Israeli Conflict, The United States and Israel: Influence in the Special Relationship, Israel: Land of Tradition and Conflict, Historical Dictionary of Israel, Securing the Covenant: United States-Israel Relations After the Cold War, Arab-Israeli Conflict and Conciliation: A Documentary History, and of Political Dictionary of Israel as well as the author of numerous articles, book chapters and monographs on Middle East politics, international politics, and United States foreign policy. I am writing in response to the one review by a reader from Staten Island. As I have read the previous editions of this book and several books by these authors I'm a bit upset with the review that is displayed... Especially since it is a review for the WRONG BOOK. Azzie Layachi which the reviewer cites as being "absent minded" IS NOT one of the authors of this book. Please take care to make sure reviews are correct and correspond to the book that is actually in review. Such negligence gives wrongful insight to others looking to purchase this book. Both Reich and Long are well know for their expertise, and their books have long been used in academia. For others to see a one star review due to the carelessness of one reader is unfortunate and unacceptable. (please note the four star review is from reading the previous editions- I have not yet read this one but it was on route to purchasing that I stumbled upon said incorrect review.)

Layachi is at is again!

This book is an updated version of a previously released book which I already rated as completely awful. I totaly dislike thsi book for many reasons, I feel Layachi is trying to push an agenda through thsi book. It is dry and boring, It serves no other use that to be used to hold a door in St. John's University Hallway open. Brought to you from the absent minded professor Azzie Layachi, a man that can't teach Poli Sci to say the least, but publishes books that are better used for toliet paper. Like in the previous editions he rambles for chapters about north Africa and how the US is treating it, well Mr. Layachi ask yourself what can I do to improve my books (and teaching) instead of lashing out with your anti-US sentiment. I think we should give up before the next 5th Edition comes into the works? I say get a refrence book on the region it will serve you better.

A book with a huge impact!

I picked up this book in 1989 and reading it was one of the most pleasurable learning experiences of my life. In writing this book, Melosh has assembled in a pleasing and logical manner the fundamentals of the science of asteroid or comet impacts and basically laid the foundation for the study of impact structures on Earth and other planets. His writing style is excellent and so are the illustrations -- I only hope that the next edition will deal with the environmental impacts of impacts . . .

Impact Cratering, a Geological Process by H. J. Melosh

This book is presently the definitive work on cratering. It includes examples from throughout the solar system, however, terrestrial cratering in sufficiently covered to inform those seeking information in identifying earth impacts. This is the book often referred to in the Lunar and Planetary Institute's handbook on cratering, Traces of a Catastrophe, which condenses the material from Melosh's book. Impact Cratering looks at all aspects of cratering mechanics, ejecta deposits, modification, simple and complex craters, atmospheric interaction, and includes formulas, many photos and diagrams, is well indexed, and has a large bibliography. This book is for the serious investigator of impact cratering but is great reading for anyone who enjoys discovering the facts behind this very wide ranging occurrence. I particularly recommend this book to geologists as they would benefit from learning of other mechanisms which could explain terrestrial phenomenon otherwise incorrectly explained or unexplained by traditional geological processes.

PAUL J. ZAK, Ph.D., is professor of economic psychology and management at Claremont Graduate University. As the founding director of Claremont's Center for Neuroeconomics Studies, he is at the vanguard of neuroeconomics, a new discipline that integrates neuroscience and economics. He has a popular Pyschology Today blog called The Moral Molecule. New Ideas, Great Writing

The molecule is oxytocin. You might be familiar with it from its role in inducing childbirth and lactation. It actually plays a huge role in maternal behavior, as well as pair bonding and pro-social behavior in general. You get a surge of it when you have sex, get a hug, see a baby, hear from an old friend. Its reputation as the love drug is well deserved.

Zak did a couple of interesting things with this hormone. First, he studied it, in a lab setting. Second, he used it to come up with a pretty comprehensive model that explains a lot of human behavior.

Zak's experiments were rather unusual. For one thing, he actually took blood to measure subjects' oxytocin levels. For another, he concentrated on typical economics experiments (the ultimatum game, for example). That's why what he's done has been jokingly called "vampire economics."

What he found is pretty interesting stuff, and basically lays to rest the old notion of homo economicus - the old "reasonable man" acting in his own "rational self-interest." This may be surprising only to economists, but Zak found that people are as emotional as they are rational, and that doing unto others makes you feel pretty darn good and is as much a motivator - if not more - than acquisitiveness.

This leads into his model where oxytocin starts a virtuous cycle of trust, caring, and all sorts of good stuff. He contrasts that with a vicious cycle based on testosterone. He then uses these models and his findings to speculate about quite a bit. For example, he:

* Speculates about the pro-social aspect of testosterone (e.g., enforcing norms)
* Wonders about both hormones' influence on the origin of religion
* Uses a lack of oxytocin to explain autistic and psychopathic behavior
* Finds that Republican have less oxytocin than Democrats and independents

Zak is also an excellent writer. Great stories, humor, and a style that makes for very easy reading.

My only reservations were for the last two chapters, where he goes a little overboard with his speculations. These chapters are not as closely tied to experiments, and get quite wooly, full of platitudes, and somewhat over-blown.

Overall, though, this is one of the best books I've read in quite awhile.

Good to trust

This book is about the hormone oxytocin (which is principally a female hormone but also present in the male). This hormone is the molecule referred to in the title of the book. "Am I actually saying that a single molecule...accounts for why some people give freely of themselves and others are coldhearted bastards, why some people cheat and steal and others you can trust with your life, why some husbands are more faithful than others, and, by the way, why some women tend to be more generous - and nicer - than men?" asks the author Paul Zak. "In a word, yes" he answers.

This molecule as Zak calls it, is a "feel good" hormone that increases when we do simple, feel good things like giving or receiving a hug, or when we give generously. The act of giving stimulates this hormone resulting in the recipient desiring to trust the giver. Zak explains that there is also a counter hormone ("testosterone") which he calls the "bad boy" hormone that increases the impulse to take risk and behave badly. However, testosterone is necessary for physical courage and strength. Thus, the mammalian animal evolved with these two hormones balancing each other and so many of the unusual behavior Zak says, can be attributed to an imbalance of those hormones.

From the general effects and the origin of this hormone in the evolutionary process, Zak discusses specific topics such as the effect of oxytocin deprivation in orphans. He also discusses the influence of oxytocin inclining people to religion. Zak believes, however, that religion serves a useful purpose regardless of whether God exists or not. Some parts of his theory concerning the connections between oxytocin in early civilisations may be controversial insofar as he postulates that oxytocin influence on the feel good factor leads people to have warm feelings which are interpreted as "love" and its connection to sex, and from there to procreation and creation. So maybe for the religious God is love but for scientists like Zak, love is God. It is a fascinating and illuminating book on the whole if one is interested in what makes us tick.

Terrific science combined with storytelling

Paul Zak. Remember the name. No, you need not. His name will come back time and again. He is a shooting star in economics and neuroeconomics. Moral Moelcule is a terrific book. Great science and great storytelling. In traditional economics, morality is an add-on. Something that must be constructed or realized through man-made rules and constitutional constraints on people's collective decision making, and for market-based decision making to work at all. Zak points to how such constraints might not have a prayer of making markets viable without the evolved chemistry of the brain that makes cooperation and trust self-rewarding. Great read, and I felt compelled to post this comment after the first four chapters, in spite of the fact that his arguments are unsettling for me as a traditional economist. I look forward to spending time with the rest of the book. Take a glimpse of the future of economics through this book. Very highly recommended.
