Amazon.com Review
As Nina Auerbach writes in the New York Times, " Stephen King assumes we hate vampires; Anne Rice makes it safe to love them, because they hate themselves. Kim Newman suspects that most of us live with them . . . . Anno Dracula is the definitive account of that post-modern species, the self-obsessed undead." In this first of what looks to be an excellent series, Victorian England has vampires at every level of society, especially the higher ones, and they engage in incessant intrigue, power games, and casual oppression of the weak--activities, as we know, that are all too human. Numerous characters from literature and from history appear in both major and cameo roles. Spectacular fight scenes, stormy politics, and a serial vampire killer keep the action lively. A scholarly bibliography is included.

From Publishers Weekly
What if Count Dracula married Queen Victoria? On this intriguing, but inescapably silly, conceit, Newman ( Jago ) bases his exercise in historical horror fiction, previously published in the U.K. In England, circa 1888, "turning" vampire is all the rage: such luminaries as Oscar Wilde, Inspector Lestrade, Sherlock Holmes's collaborator, and the Queen herself have embraced vampirism. Those who haven't find themselves shunned by society and facing banishment to internment camps if their opposition to the new regime becomes threatening. Enter Jack the Ripper. In this version of history, he is none other than Jack Seward, the lovelorn doctor of Bram Stoker's Dracula , who here murders vampire women to avenge the death of his beloved Lucy. While Londoners, vampire and "warm" alike, vie to catch the Ripper for their own agendas, Charles Beauregard, agent of Conan Doyle's mysterious Diogenes Club, must track him down for the most vital reason of all: the future of England. Newman's meticulous attention to historical detail occasionally seems superfluous in a work of such unabashed fantasy, but his prose is sure-handed and vivid, especially in Seward's diary entries, which, free of the welter of Victorian trivia, are truly engrossing.

From Kirkus Reviews
Newman goes over the top in every novel (Night Mayor, Bad Dreams, Jago), each featuring a monstrous overlord of horror unlikely to be dethroned--but this time he leaps to new heights, drawing the Dracula novel that sets a benchmark for vampire fiction. Warning: the blood, well, you can't say it's overdone, for a vampire novel, but two qualities distinguish Newman's story: the immense physiological detail shoring up the reality of the undead, and the gathering sense of the author's enjoyment in what he does here--among other things, his sheer love of chockablock Victorian detail. The plot: Vlad Tepes, or Dracula, did not die as in Bram Stoker but rather survived and, political genius, rose to marry Queen Victoria in 1885 and become her consort. Dracula rules England, with Victoria doglike in a leash at his feet. What's more, it's now fashionable to be a vampire, especially among the nobility, while among the lower orders the change from ``warm'' to the immortal undead can be bought from any corner whore for the price of a shot of gin or draft of pig's blood at the pub. Jack the Ripper, however, hates undead whores and knows that destroying any vital organ can kill them. Who is Jack? None other that Stoker's Dr. John (Jack) Seward, who helped drive a stake into Lucy Westenra, Stoker's heroine. Jack's gone round the bend, living among a people who look upon vampirism as, well, pretty nice. The police assign Genevieve Dieuxdonne, a vampire detective, herself a half-century older than Dracula, to chase down Jack, assisted by Charles Beauregard, handsome henchman of Conan Doyle's The Diogenes Club, England's Star Chamber. Also on hand: Mycroft Holmes, Dr. Jekyll, and dozens of famed Victorians from literature and real life, all mingling in a fogbound milieu that rubs like cat fur on the reader's imagination. A bloody delight. -- Copyright 1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Anno Dracula (Titan Books edition)
By Brendan Moody
There are books one simply shouldn't attempt to describe to the casual reader; regardless of merit, they sound not just uninteresting, but deeply silly. In eighth grade I was reading Harry Turtledove's Worldwar tetralogy, and a well-meaning classmate mentioned to our history teacher that I was reading a book about World War II. I was left to explain, "Yes, it's an alternate history where World War II is underway... and then aliens invade." Mercifully, I've forgotten what Mr. Dennett's reaction was.

The other day I was in the car, reading the new edition of Kim Newman's landmark vampire alternate history Anno Dracula, and I happened to read a passage out to my mother. (For readers familiar with the book, it was the exchange of insults in the pub.) She asked what the book's premise was, and I dutifully replied: "Well, it's like Dracula, except Dracula wins and he marries Queen Victoria." Mother was not amused.

I suppose it does sound ridiculous, but it isn't really. Dracula was a prince, and his ambitions were not small; had he not been defeated by Van Helsing's merry band, he might well have ingratiated himself with the British royal family, and the consequence would have been the world Newman portrays: a country where vampires have emerged into everyday life, where the best way to advance in high society is to "turn" and vampire-resisters are dragged off to concentration camps, where the prostitutes of the East End are as likely to offer blood as sex. Unless they're vampires themselves.

The story around which Newman's evocation of this alternate England is woven is the author's second quirky stroke of genius: Jack the Ripper is active in this world as well, but all his victims are vampires. The police, urged on by the government, are desperate to find this madman and potential folk hero, and so is the Diogenes Club, a secretive organization devoted to the national interest. The Club's agent, Charles Beauregard, finds himself working alongside the centuries old vampire Genevive to find the Ripper. But their investigation is complicated by the sheer range of suspects, not to mention a vendetta against Genevive and an increasingly repressive palace regime.

As one might expect, the characters of the novel include several from Dracula-- those, at least, who have survived, including Dr. Seward and Arthur Holmwood. But other Victorian and Edwardian literature is amply represented. One of the police detectives is Inspector Lestrade, while two doctors consulted about the murderer's knowledge and motivations are named Jekyll and Moreau. Vampires from other fiction have flocked to England for safety and freedom. Readers who don't like this sort of cameo appearance are advised not to read Anno Dracula, which is littered with them. For those who enjoy the game of tracking down references, there are plenty of semi-obscure names to identify. Historical figures, from Oscar Wilde to Sir Charles Warren, also appear.

But the novel is much more than a complicated game of Where's Waldo. Its world-building, in which real-world issues like sodomy raids and child prostitution are given a vampire twist, is ingenious enough, but it also includes vivid action sequences, intricate political intrigue, and a well-thought-out investigation. The Ripper's identity (itself a brilliant notion) is revealed to the reader early on, turning the book into a howcatchem rather than a whodunit, but allowing a powerful, disturbing insight into the killer's motivations. Anno Dracula is a fast-paced, delightful entertainment, a marvel of storytelling for those who like this sort of thing.

The book, first published in the 1990s, has long been out of print, but was recently released in a new edition by Titan Books. In addition to the original text, the new edition includes a number of bonus features: annotations by the author, identifying some of the more obscure references; an afterword on the novel's genesis; an excerpt from the novella "Red Reign," which preceded the novel and has a slightly different ending; extracts from Newman's unproduced screenplay for a film version, which includes a few new sequences and some altered characters; "Drac the Ripper," an essay on other Ripper/Dracula stories; and "Dead Travel Fast," a short story featuring Dracula that, while not formally part of the Anno Dracula universe, could fit into it, and is in any case a sharp, nasty piece dealing with a less-appreciated trait of the vampire.

I mention the Anno Dracula universe. Newman followed the original novel with two sequels: The Bloody Red Baron, set during World War I, and Dracula Cha Cha Cha (released in the US under the dull title Judgment of Tears), set in the 1950s. A fourth novel, Johnny Alucard, bringing the series into the present day, has long been in the works. Titan Books now plans to publish the entire series. Anno Dracula came out this month; The Bloody Red Baron (containing a never-before-published novella) will follow in October 2011, while Dracula Cha Cha Cha (with another new novella) will appear in April 2012 and Johnny Alucard in October 2012. Fans of Wold Newton-esque vampire fiction have much to look forward to.

Excellent alternative-history and dark fantasy
By Claude Avary
At the moment I write this, Kim Newman's "Anno Dracula" is out of print. (Hopefully, by the time you read this, it will be available again.) It baffles me that such a wonderful recent novel (1992) could easily slip out of publication, especially when it is still very popular: apparently used bookstores can't keep this one their shelves for more then a day. With the huge success of Alan Moore's graphic novel "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" you would think this similar blending of Victorian personages, both historical and fictional, would widely available. This is really the dark fantasy version of Moore's heroic graphic novel, and anyone who enjoys either 1) alternative history, 2) vampire novels, or 3) dark fantasy will adore this book and never let their copy out of their greedy reading hands.
Mr. Newman imagines Victorian England if the bloodsucking count had been the victor in Dracula. The Count marries Queen Victoria and becomes ruler of an England rapidly becoming the territory of `new-born' vampires, who seek to be `turned' so they can rise in rank. Dracula opens up a reign of terror reminiscent of a medieval monarchy, yet still filled with traditional British Vicotrian attitudes. It's a delightful mixed brew of history and gothic darkness.
Into this thrilling setting slinks Jack the Ripper (also known as `Silver Knife'), slashing vampire girls in Whitechapel. Charles Beauregard, a human (or a 'warm' in vampire terms) who works for a secret society, and Genevieve, a vampire of an ancient boodline who has great distate for Dracula's reign both search for the murderer. Coming from two different angles, they join forces to try to fathom the mystery of the killings. Their invesitgation will lead to repercussions for all of this topsy-turvy, nightmare version of England.
"Anno Dracula" is an extraordinary feat of imagination: bloody, violent, erotic, and chock-full of historical and fictional guest stars: Oscar Wilde, Arthur Holmwood, Henry Jekyll, Jack the Ripper, Dr. Moreau, Danny Dravot (from Kipling's "The Man Who Would be King"), Professor Moriarty, George Bernard Shaw, etc. Even a quick mention of Lewis Carroll and Allan Quartermain! It's a Victorian literature lover`s dream come true -- and one for any fan of dark, exciting, BLOODY good fantasy and horror. Look for a copy, and let's hope it will be back in print soon!

Great Premise, Disappointing Execution
By meltingdew
I picked up Anno Dracula in a bookstore a couple of days ago and, intrigued by the ridiculousness of the premise, read the first couple of pages. I was immediately impressed by the accurateness of the style and voice (as mimicked Stoker's Dracula) and bought it. Here are my impressions:

1. Newman really did his homework. He integrates material that demonstrates a knowledge not only of Vlad Tepes and Stoker's Dracula, but also of the other important historical and literary characters of the time period. He includes such characters as Oscar Wilde, Mycroft Holmes, and Dr. Jekyll in such a way as demonstrates familiarly and understanding.

2. Unfortunately, this understanding (and his mimicry of style -- which fades, by the way) does not extend to content. There is a high level of brutal violence and sex very inconsistent with Stoker's work, including some things unlikely for the time period (a certain gentleman from Stoker's Dracula would not make a graphic record of his sexual exploits for posterity, even if he'd gone mad). Newman appears to have no concept of subtlety or subtext. Content warnings for graphic violence and sex, including the violent rape of a child prostitute.

3. Although he's clearly familiar with which characters existed, Newman's versions of them are often vastly altered from their originals, and become almost universally unlikable and depraved. The way he depicts vampires makes them entirely repugnant, including those we're supposed to like and root for.

4. Kudos to Newman for clever integration of multiple vampire types and legends. He does make some unnecessary (and poorly explained away) alterations to the nature of Dracula-type vampires, but they are still recognizable.

5. Newman takes his own ridiculous premise utterly seriously. There were no laughs in this book, and only a few moments of mild amusement, mostly deriving from his historical mash-up. However, I feel that many of these moments would be lost on most people. Ruddigore happens to be my favorite of Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas, but it is not well known, so how many people would get the reference to Ruthven Murgatroyd? (He explains the joke a little, although in a way that made me wonder if he'd actually seen the operetta.)

6. Dracula is barely in the book. His one eventual appearance is brief and disappointing, not to mention vastly out of character.

7. The major flaw of the book is that it lacks tension. The main plot is about finding a murderer called the Silver Knife. The murderer is transparently (and eventually named as) Jack the Ripper. Although this plot line is treated as a mystery, we know the Silver Knife's identity from the first line of the first page of the first chapter; he holds the narrative. Since Jack the Ripper is extremely famous, most people know a) only five victims were definitely attributed to him, b) it was popularly believed he was a doctor, and c) he was never caught. Allowing for literary conventions, it was blatantly obvious to me how this plot line was going to end. Indeed, by historical necessity (i.e. we reached victim #5), his plot line largely fizzled out around page 200. Despite this, the "mystery" element is strung along tediously and pointlessly for the next 200 pages. During these 200 pages, the book coasts along without anything to push it, with little resembling plot and nothing resembling tension. After that, the book ends with a brief, uninteresting climax that is largely unconnected with anything that's happened previously (but with a massive plot hole masquerading as sequel-baiting). The last 100 pages is extras.

Overall, although I don't recommend this book, nor do I recommend against it. It's easily readable, and its premise is sufficiently decent to sustain it (more or less) for its duration. If someone gave me the sequel, I'd probably read it, but I definitely won't be seeking it out.

UPDATE: It's now been about three weeks since I read Anno Dracula. In the interim, I was inspired to reread Bram Stoker's Dracula, since it had been several years since I'd last read it. The more I read it, the more I had to come to the conclusion that Newman either completely misunderstood or loathed his source material. He goes out of his way to make wise characters foolish, moral characters debased, and clever characters stupid. Whereas the major themes of Dracula were redemption and the rewarding of purity, Anno Dracula rewards the morally debased and reverses redemption.

The Savior of Science, by Stanley L. Jaki

An award-winning philosopher uncovers the Christian foundations of modern science.

Renowned historian and philosopher of science Stanley Jaki boldly illumines one of the best-kept secrets of science history— the vital role theology has historically played in fruitful scientific development.

Beginning with an overview of failed attempts at a sustained science by the ancient cultures of Greece, China, India, and the early Muslim empire, Jaki shows that belief in Christ—a belief absent in all these cultures—secured for science its only viable birth starting in the High Middle Ages. In the second part of the book Jaki argues that Christian monotheism alone provides the intellectual safeguards for a valid cosmological argument, restores the sense of purpose destroyed by theories of evolution, and secures firm ethical guidelines against fearful abuses of scientific know-how.

Crotchetty and unsatisfying.
By David Marshall
As a Christian historian, I tend to agree with many of Jaki's points. He also owns a certain intellectual brilliance -- I found myself ear-marking many pages, to return and write down juicy quotes. The problem is, Jaki refuses to support his arguments with enough facts. The book often comes across as crotchety, dismissive, and even egotistical. Jaki is brilliant perhaps, but he doesn't give critical readers a chance to be persuaded. Instead, he rambles relentlessly, skipping from Justice Bork to Darwin to Arianism to sollipsism. Not always does he explain his point clearly, and seldom does he back it up with enough solid facts. Part of this follows from attempting two thousand years of history in 230 pages. But like G. K. Chesterton, Jaki also seems to feel an actual aversion to detail, though without Chesterton's humor, good-naturedness, or psychological acuity.

I found Jaki's point about the rise of science weak as an argument, though possibly true. Are wrong worldviews to blame for the stillbirth of science in ancient non-Christian civilizations? That is a provocative thesis, worth exploring. But a few paragraphs of dismissive and elusive discussion (6 for Egypt, 10 for India, 15 for China, 4 for Babylon, 8 for Greece, 5 for Islam) should not be enough to satisfy even fellow believers. Given that science did in fact happen to rise in the West, of course one can find post hoc reasons why this should be so; but to prove that it HAD to be so would take a far more in-depth and detailed argument.

I was even less satisfied when I noticed that, while he got some things right (about ancient theism, for instance), he made a few errors about one civization I know fairly well, China. I think Jaki overstates the influence of Confucianism and Taoism on public Maoism; of all the books Mao sold as a young man, only one came from traditional China; all the rest were Marxist and foreign. Jaki is just ignorant when he asks, quoting Bertrand Russell, "if . . . this youthful vigor in the Chinese mind was in fact very old, why was it 'often very difficult to interest even the most reforming Chinese in afforestation?' And if the answer was that . . . reforesting vast tracts of bare hillsides was 'not a subject for ethical enthusiasm,' how could Confucius . . . be presented as a model of modern, reform-minded Chinsese?'" In fact Confucius' greatest disciple, Mencius, wrote passionately about protecting the environment, including forests. (Taoists also described the stripping of the environment as a sin.) If modern Chinese have not followed their example (and they haven't, until recently), neither did many other early industrial societies. Jaki's attempt to reduce this question to theology is either simplistic (if I understand him) or vague (because I am not sure that I do.) Marx and others reduced civilizational causation to material forces, and that is wrong; but we should not respond with an equally simplistic argument reducing everything to spirituality.

Jaki's take on modern science is also titilating as an appetizer, but unsatisfying as a full meal. His discussion of Buridan, a name I did not know, is interesting, when he finally comes to it. But his grumpy discussions of Descartes, Darwin, Einstein, etc, seem longer on invective (and on airy and sometimes insightful assertions) than on convincing evidence.

All in all, I doubt anybody who did not already agree with Dr. Jaki would be persuaded by this book. It is probably worthwhile to read, if you hold Jaki's many insights in your hand without grasping. But if we're going to persuade the world of the life-giving value of the Gospel, I think we need to speak more generously, and in more detail. Stephen Barr's Modern Physics and Ancient Faith, and Peacey and Thaxton's The Soul of Science, fill in some of the missing detail, though admittedly with less flair. On the larger cultural argument, see also the works of Vishal Mangalwadi, and (also very brief) chapter 7 of my Jesus and the Religions of Man, entitled "How has Jesus changed the world?"

Science, Religion, and Careful Thought
By James E. Egolf
Father Stanley Jaki, OSB, (1924-2009) was a well known physicist and astronomer during the 20th. and 21st.centuries. He taught and lectured in European and U.S. univerities. He also demonstrated knowledge of history, philosophy, theology, etc. In his book titled THE SAVORIOR OF SCIENCE, Father Jaki demonstrated that popular notions of science and religion were myths based on lack of historical knowledge, popular misconceptions, scientific confusion, and greed which muted intelligent debate re religion, science, and philosophy.

Father Jaki showed insight re the comments of scientists who claimed no moral guidance re their work. Father Jaki contrasted this superficial attitude with the science that led to machine guns, poison gas, more destructive artillery, and mass carage during W.W. I. This was followed by concentration camp brutality, flying fortresses, the obliteration of cities, and the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb was followed thermonuclear weapons. In other words, those members of the scientific community had to be aware that what they did could not only improve living standards but also destroy every man, woman, and child on the planet. This view was not idle talk but possible tragic reality. Father Jaki reminded readers of what can occur when religious convictions are muted, and material greed is honored in place of compassion, kindness, careful thought, and wisdom. In other words, where can our "progress" lead us?

Father then gave a brief history of non-European peoples and why they did not have the advances of Western Civiliztion. Father Jaki was honest enough to credit non-Europeans for their achievements and that such achievements embellished Western Civilization. However, as much as the Ancient Egyptions achieved re architecture and irrigation, their obsession with animal worship and death halted their concept of transcendence. Father Jaki credited the Ancient Hindus with creating the decimal system and other advances. However, Jaki argued that the Hindu and Buddhist view of a cyclical cosmos stunted their civilizations, and one can think of the Caste System. Father Jaki credited the Moslems with the development of Arabic numbers, geometry, algerbra, and medicine. Yet,some Moslems could not delve into a clear concept of cause-and-effect because of a "conservative" rigorous interpretation of the KORAN. Again, Father Jaki was honest enough to also explain that, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity had some common characteristics.

Father Jaki then focused on the Catholic Faith, the Cosmos, time. He explained that the Ancient Hebrews has a grand view of the Cosmos, but these people understood that God was the Creator of the Cosmos and not the Cosmos. In other words, the Cosmos is a wonder but not God. Father Jaki showed his familiarity with the Old Testament and New Testament and cited several passages re God, the Cosmos, and man as created in God's image. According to Father Jaki, God is the First Cause. Father Jaki was no pantheist and showed that pantheism as an abondonment of good vs. evil and moral responsibility. God is not a refill but is a priori to everything that exists. He mention Cardinal John Newman (1801-1890)who wrote in Newman'sbook THE IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY that the only thought greater than the universe is the Creator of the universe.

Father Jaki then wrote about Revelation and Reason. Obviously, Jaki knew that Aristarchus (310-250 BC), Kepler (1571-1630), and even Galileo (1564-1642) could not be as accurate as modern astronomers given their lack of good telescopes which were centuries in the future. Father Jaki severely critisized Kant (1724-1804)when Kant stated that the universe was not real but only a metaphysical concept. One of the problems Kant and later "philosophers" is that they thought they had "the final answer" which exluded transcendence-and hope.Albert Einstein (1879-1955)was able to admit that there are universal laws. When Father LeMaitre (1894-1966), S.J.,did mathematical work re an expanding universe, Einstein was gracious enough to give Father LeMaitre credit in spite of superficial religious differences.

During much of the 20th. and early 21st. centuries, many populizers of science tried to substitute wild imaginations for careful scienctific thought. The vain attempt to find life outside of our planet have been fruitless, and the idea of sending a space vehicle which will reach something in about 10,000 years is fruitless. Jaki commented on what Purcell called the stuff of cereal boxes and comic books. Yet, men are immune from the complexity of life on earth from insects to the complex systems of men and women. To quote Rabelais (c. 1483-c.1559)"Science without conseicens if but the soul's decadence." This quote well defines the concerns Father Jaki presented in this book.

Obviously Father Jaki had to confront the concept of creation science and Darwinism. Those in both camps were severely critisized by Father Jaki. Jaki critisized the advocates of creation science because of their attempts to measure God-or reduce God to their own pettiness. Father Jaki critisized William Jennings Bryan (1865-1925)during the Scopes' trial in 1925. Bryan wasted his oratorial ability in trying to state a time table for the Creation and that the creation scientists try to reduce God to a fashion designer. Father Jaki also condemned the Darwinists because of their claims of absolute truth in spite of new discoveries. The Darwinists lost all of their sense of wonder and awe which makes for a dull view.

The final section of the book dealt with men and their immortal souls which should be well beyond any government no matter how gradiose the political leaders may claim to be. Men are not political puppets to enshrine some political system which caters to a materialist greedy world that has no moral purpose or direction.

Father Jaki demonstrated considerable knowledge of physics, astronomy, biology, and other scientific disciplines. He also showed a good grasp of historical knowledge. One reviewer said Father Jaki could not think. Actually, Father Jaki could think as proven by his contributions to physics. Another reviewer argued that Father Jaki was too irritable. This may be true, but such irritability can draw readers' attention. Basically Father Jaki argued that knowledge can lead to thought and thought can lead to more knowledge. Father Jaki wrote that knowledge should have purpose and wisdom as ultimate goals.

Illuminating book
By Mayra Lingvay
I just love this book. I have a Masters in Electrical Engineering and would have really profited from this book back in college. This has helped me appreciate the significance of Newton's 3 Laws at a gut level and to make sense out of the mindset of the ancient pagan cultures.

Now I understand that for true science to emerge, or as Fr Jaki puts it, to be born, it was necessary that mainstream culture of the time be convinced of the eternal nature of God, the finite nature of the universe and that the only begotten of God is Jesus Christ (not the universe). The Christian world view with its relience on the omnipotence of God and its understanding of the order in which He created everything OUT OF NOTHING had to be ingrained in people's minds before science would be able to formulate the Laws of Motion and the theory of Relativity. The ancient's understanding of reality as never ending repeating cycles in rigid determinism, the treadmill world view, could only yield contradictions such as we see in Aristotle's "On the Heavens" in which among other errors, he formulates that an object of twice the weight falls at twice the speed.

This has led me on a quest to impart to my five young children this same understanding of Christ as the Saviour of Science that Jaki has given me. I'm taking advantage that I homeschool them, and am focusing on history this year. I have written a lesson for my children and others in my homeschool group on Acient Greece which is built around Fr Jaki's illuminating work, The Savior of Science. I plan to continue teaching from Fr Jaki's same perspective the ancient culture of Egypt and the Hebrews as well.

This book is definately worth buying and studying. I believe anyone with the desire to learn will profit greatly from Fr Jaki's fascinating and inspired insights. I am TRULLY grateful.

A life saver--buy this book
By Forbzilla
If you are in contact with a complicated brain injury, think no one understands, feel unheard and desperately need help, buy this book.
After struggling for a year and a half with my partner's TBI symptoms I bought a number of books. This one is clear, easy to read and effectively describes exactly the symptoms and difficulties we have experienced. The most valuable point it makes is highlighting the group of people with brain injuries that are falling through the cracks of typical medicine. If you are concerned with the small subset of complicated post concussion syndrome with seizure like episodes that an EEG doesn't pick up, you will finally feel seen. Best yet there are well-documented reports of what treatments seem to work, and which ones are typically not effective. Of the three doctors we work with, only one was willing to take a look. And he had the same "ah-ha" moment that I did. We have changed our treatment--and high time because the decline was frightening. This book should be on every physician's shelf who deals with concussions.

650 Recipes for EVERYTHING You'll Ever Want to Make.

Because smaller families shouldn't have to rely on recipes built for four or six, America's Test Kitchen has reengineered 650 of our best recipes to serve just two. Over the years we've discovered that scaling down a recipe isn't as simple as cutting the ingredients in half—cooking times, temperatures, and equipment need to be adapted as well. This comprehensive cookbook takes the guesswork out of cooking for two so you can be sure that anything you want to make—from Classic Beef Stew to Lasagna to a mini batch of Fudgy Brownies or a Fluffy Yellow Layer Cake—will come out right (and perfectly proportioned) every time. We'll also give you options when you're short on time. 150 recipes, including Chicken Saltimbocca and Pan-Seared Rib-Eye Steaks with Sweet-Tart Red Wine Sauce, can be on the table in 30 minutes or less. For those times when you want healthier fare, we've provided more than 100 recipes labeled "Light" such as Provencal Vegetable Soup and Poached Shrimp Salad with Avocado and Grapefruit, each with nutritional information listed in an easy-to-read chart in the back of the book. And we include chapters on for-two slow cooking, grilling, and baking pies, quick breads, cakes, and cookies. Three "words": UH-MAY-ZING!!!!
By Dealinthebag
I have been a home cook for YEARS. I have often cooked full Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for family and friends. I bake several times a week (breads, cookies, muffins, pies) and I consider myself a pretty decent cook, baker, and at the grill as well. Love this cookbook for several reasons. They recognize that cooking for two is very common these days- as there many types of families beyond the nuclear (like it or not, it is a fact). Young couples who live without children, single parents, empty nesters, divorcees, or even those who live alone. Cutting a recipe in half isn't always as easy as it sounds. Buying in bulk isn't always the best option, especially when it leads to waste. ATK has made this book with exactly all that in mind. They included everything for small portions (see pic of index attached).

I have cooked at least a dozen things from this book including main, sides, and desserts. Most have been wonderful recipes, only one did I think "I could improve that". This book would benefit both the novice and be enjoyed by a seasoned chef.

How it helps the novice, includes: How to store leftovers/extra unprepared food, food/emergency substitutions, how to put leftover ingredients into other meals, essential kitchen tools, ingredient prep. Actually, I learned a lot from these sections, as well.

Recipes are easy to follow and taste great. Since its just me (and I will often cook for a friend or my boyfriend), I will have leftovers for one or two meals, and that is perfect, instead of having the same leftovers for days, or having a freezer full of leftovers I forget about. This has become my absolute favorite cookbook... dare I say even more so than my Ina Garten cookbook!! I often look forward to cooking recipes from this book. The only cookbook I have ever enjoyed sitting down and reading was Ina's. And then I bought THIS. LOVE IT!!!

Great for a college students, newlyweds, or empty-nesters.

I just got this cookbook last week. I have already used it to make two recipes (the roasted garlic shrimp pasta with feta and the whole wheat rotini with bacon and brussels sprouts). Both were excellent.

There are some things I really like about this cookbook. First off, many of these recipes are scaled down version of ATK recipes. This is convenient for a college student like me. Also, when ATK scales recipes it isn't simply reduce every ingredient by 1/2 or 1/3; ATK will make substitutes to more convenient products that make sense for two people. This is the case with many stews. Instead of requiring a readers to find a 2lb chuck roast (not easy) they will substitute steak tips.

I also enjoy that this is a complete cookbook. This means that the cookbook features a wide variety of dishes for almost any occasion (breakfast, dinner, lunch, dessert, holidays, and even some ethnic). After reading the cookbook I am grateful for some of the designations provided by the editor. Certain recipes are indicated as light or fast to prepare. I have a feeling that I will be turning to these recipes in the future when I don't know what to cook.

I received this cookbook as a birthday gift. I had never really considered recipes for two since the offerings are so limited, but since there are 650 very usable recipes I am excited to be using this cookbook for many years to come. As a single college student I find that cooking for two is a nice way to enjoy a hot meal and have the right amount of leftovers for lunch the following day. This is the perfect solution for those who are struggling to cook for anything less than a large family.

Lose Weight and Save Money!
By Augustina
I got this cookbook for 2 key reasons: 1) so my husband and I could cook together and 2) to learn better, time saving techniques. The benefits I ended up reaping were weight loss and a smaller grocery budget.

I have a couple of the other ATK cookbooks including the Slow Cooker one and Cooking School. After making a few of the recipes, I shelved the cookbooks because we just ended up with too much food. Cutting recipes in half wasn't always practical (and still produced too much food) and sometimes they could be more labor intensive than is worth it for 2 people. And forget about baking, the dessert recipes just made too much and the temptation to eat more than I should was too great.

I didn't want to give up on ATK because their cookbooks have clear instructions and consistent results. With illustrations and a central reference, my husband, who does not cook, is able to help out in the kitchen. I was so happy to discover Cooking For Two!!

Cooking For Two isn't just the regular ATK recipes cut in half or third. They've actually re-engineered their recipes to use smaller cookware and streamlined techniques to minimize appliances and overall number of dirty dishes. There are a number of dishes that start in a skillet and go into the oven, in the skillet, where the larger recipe would require transfer to a baking dish. Probably my number one favorite recipe in this book is the Skillet Pizza. We used to spend about $50 a week on high end takeout pizza. I use store-bought pizza dough and making that recipe actually takes *less* time than ordering takeout. A lot of the recipes using tomato sauce have you make your own by running a can of diced tomatoes in the food processor which is significantly cheaper than buying premium ready-made sauce, and tastes better too. Another one of my favorite recipes uses fresh ravioli or tortellini from the refrigerated section and you cook the pasta in a single skillet with a watery sauce that thickens as the pasta cooks. Again incredibly easy and even faster, and cheaper, than delivery. Every recipe I've tried has taken 15-30 minutes of hands on prep time max and has come out perfectly every time.

I'm watching my calories (I don't do "low fat" or "low calorie" because that's an express ticket to a midnight ice cream binge) and my husband is a light eater. The recipes say they serve 2, for us it's usually 3-4 servings. The regular recipes average about 500-600 calories per ATK-size serving, so even if I do eat a full serving, it's not that big of a deal. And when you're cooking a lasagna in a 9"x 4" bread loaf pan, half of that looks pretty huge. Compare that to a 13" x 9" lasagna pan where a 4" x 4" slice would look pretty measly. Desserts are no longer off the menu for me as I can eat a half serving without having to throw away half a cake (thus removing the temptation to eat too big of a serving). Quick breads are baked in mini-loaf pans, miniature layer cakes are 6" in diameter, cookies are by the dozen, and pies are 6". I love the mini bundt cakes. All of the desserts are easily 4 small servings which don't break my daily calorie bank. And if I'm tempted to overdo it, well, there isn't that much to overdo it on. Breakfast options are also scaled down, for instance to 6 total pancakes (3 servings for us).

Seriously, Cooking for Two does a lot for your portion size perspective. I've already lost almost 20 lbs and cook almost exclusively from this cookbook.

For a household for 2, we used to spend about $1000 a month on food (both groceries and restaurants/takeout). Since using this cookbook, we spend about $500 a month on food including restaurants and takeout.

If you're just one or two people, or even 3, and you want to lose weight, save money, cook really good food from scratch with minimal fuss, and/or make cooking a spending quality time together activity, then I highly recommend this cookbook. It's been a real lifesaver for me.

UPDATE:

I've now lost 65 lbs since I wrote this review! I'm still using this cookbook regularly. It's a great reference for cutting down their other recipes. I am such a fan of their cookbooks, I've managed to pick up a few more. I highly recommend Make Ahead Cook, One Pan Wonders, and Cook It In Cast Iron, all of these are pretty easy to scale down. If I'm not sure the best way to halve something or the recipe seems too labor intensive I just refer to a similar recipe in this one. When scaling down the Dutch Oven recipes, I use a half sized dutch oven (3 qt).

I recently purchased a Wolf Gourmet Countertop Oven and switched from non-stick skillets to using Lodge cast iron skillets with loop handles (instead of long handles) so they fit in the smaller oven easily. If you do a lot of smaller scale cooking, I highly recommend this appliance. While it only fits up to a quarter sheet pan, I was already using a quarter sheet pan for most of the recipes in this book.

Probably my most made recipe in this book is the "Ravioli with Meat Sauce" recipe. I use Barilla dried cheese tortellini with no other adjustments, and just cover the pan for the recommended cooking time in the recipe.

My main complaint is that I run into a recipe here and there that is literally a normal recipe cut in half. Also the serving sizes are a bit all over the map. Some recipes really do serve 2 while others can feed 4. I usually assume I'll get 3-4 servings out of the recipes and just plan on an extra side for the ones I know make less (like the Teriyaki Steak Tips).

Another thing I wish they'd have included is scaling down on grilling. I have an 18" Weber Jumbo Joe because for 2 people it makes no sense to use a full size 24" grill. The recipes in the Grilling chapter work great on my smaller grill but the charcoal amounts didn't. Cook's Country only recently published an article discussing this, they suggest scaling the number of briquettes down by 25%. They also recommend putting water in a large (7x5ish) loaf pan instead of the 13x9 pan, and reducing the water by 25% (but keep the amount of wood chips the same). I still use a full sized chimney starter but for 2 people it just makes sense to have a smaller setup and use less briquettes. Hopefully a future version of this cookbook will have a better grilling section!!

Finally after using the book so much, it's fallen apart. I wish they made a spiral bound version with waterproof pages!

By Brit C Power
I also have the previous book, Masterly Batting, so I was happy to see the authors had produced a companion volume on bowling. A lot of the same high-end cricket writers are here, e.g. Rob Smyth, Stephen Chalke, but there are some new ones such as David Tossell, though I must admit I didn't know Sid Waddell's son was a cricket writer!

As to the contents, it's along the same lines as Masterly Batting, though the criteria used to rank is necessarily different. As to the the rankings themselves, I don't really have a problem with them though I was surprised at the winner. In any case, all of the great bowlers you'd expect to see are represented, such as Warne, Murali, Trueman, Ambrose, Barnes...and Stuart Broad.

Great fun!

Good read
By Andy Griffin
As with the previous book on batting (Masterly Batting: 100 Great Test Centuries), the authors (or editors) have given it the soft touch by saying "100 Great Test Performances", though by ranking them 100 down to 1 they're obviously saying these are the best - why not just come out and say it?

Anyway, I enjoyed this book, the writing is great and from some of the best cricket writers, such as David Frith and more recent writers like Rob Smyth. The method is well described and I was particularly impressed by how they determine the "worth" or value of a performance - seems groundbreaking and a whole new way to separate performances rather than based on wickets first then average

The Microbiology Coloring Book, by I. Edward Alcamo, Lawrence M. Elson

This is a book about microorganisms: viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and multicellular parasites. It is a text on microbiology, and covers basic microbiology, medical microbiology, and some industrial microbiology. It is an unusual text because it offers the student an opportunity to learn by coloring illustrations in a planned and meaningful sequence. The coloring approach opens the subject of microorganisms to high school students, yet college and graduate students will also find the content of this text challenging. A great deal of information can be gained from studying and working properly designed illustrations. "A picture is worth a thousand words." The student who colors the plates of this book will find real satisfaction in understanding the subject matter because it can be visualized. When recall of the material is required, the picture, complete with thoughtfully applied colors, quickly comes to mind. This book is a very important way to learn about a broad spectrum of microorganisms and how they interact with humans. Happy Coloring!

This is a great learning tool to help memorize key microbes and other needed material. Visual learning is so much easier and more fun because facts stick to your brain more. I also used the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questons and Answers (ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book helped me to know the kind of questions to prepare for on my exams. I am a undergraduate student and found both books very helpful. In fact, I got a 93 average in my college microbiology class.
