Cardboard Adam looks for meaning

'The Tragedy of Man' has as its protagonists Lucifer and the first men, Eve and Adam. After Lucifer has led Eve and Adam to the fall his aim as the `spirit who negates' is to complete his work by bringing them to utter despair and thereby destroying God's creation. His attempt involves inducing a deep sleep in the couple in which they are shown the course of humanity on earth.

In 15 scenes Adam takes on a variety of historic and future personae (a pharaoh, Miltiades, Kepler and so on) who exemplify a variety of concepts about human existence. Invariably, each concept is shown to be flawed. Miltiades for instance stands for the democratic ideal and is felled by mob rule (although in reality he wasn't executed as the play proclaims). After leading us through a plethora of historical settings we follow Adam into the future, first a socialist one and then to a very dire stage at the end of the world.

Returning after their sleep Adam is indeed driven to kill himself but is stopped by Eve announcing her pregnancy. God has the last word, telling Adam `I've told thee, Adam - strive and trust'..

Imre Madach is apparently the national poet of Hungary and this play is held in high acclaim there. It's difficult to gauge this as I don't speak Hungarian unfortunately and this edition is a photo-mechanical reproduction of the translation by William Loew (a lawyer) from 1908. Forgotten Books is to be commended for making this book available at all, still I can't help but think that a modern and professional treatment would improve the experience no end.

As it stands comparisons to `Paradise Lost' and `Faust' are very apparent due to the subject matter. As stated any comment on the poetic quality would be presumptuous so I'll concentrate on the plot. There, I found Madach's characters to be quite one-dimensional compared to Milton and Goethe. Lucifer's single goal is to destroy God's creation and Adam is a hick who comes up with all kinds of schemes, throws himself at them with abandon only to ditch them at the first obstacle and then looks for the next new thing to excite him.

Real human beings would probably modify their ideas when faced with a problem and even, maybe, learn from past experiences. If the `Miltiades' scene mentioned above shows that radical democracy has its flaws is the answer really amoral debauchery as in the scene that follows in the play? Wouldn't it be more realistic to tamper with democracy and add some safeguards? Eve is even worse, never really escaping the `dim-witted-whore-or-Madonna'-mould but this having been published in 1861 such criticism shouldn't go too far.

The upshot is that life is meaningless; the only meaning is produced by searching for God. This is very Kierkegaardian, if not directly influenced by him. The conclusion fails to convince, however, by the protagonists being mere scaffolds for Madach to hang his ideas over. Imre Madach was a devout protestant so I don't doubt his sincerity but even if taken at face value what claim has the play's God on the faith of man?

Eve and Adam are thrown before the bus, left at the mercy of Lucifer and after being shown the complete futility of every conceivable endeavour God steps blithely onto the scene and commands faith?

So despite my objections I do like the concept and I think it would make for some very entertaining theatre if produced. One hilarious scene is the Byzantine argument over whether the trinity is `homoiousian' or `homoousian'. Parallels to our current time are surely incidental.

Hungary must have a council of the arts or some equivalent. Perhaps they could be induced to sponsor a modern edition of this work?

Amazing Imagination and Insight

This is an amazing book. It is difficult to read because of problems with translation. But it is not at all difficult to follow the theme, the imagination and the insights of the author.The message is applicable to all ages - the past, the present and the future. It is no wonder that this book is considered a classic. It is a wonder that this book is not known widely.

I may have learned more because of how buggy the code examples were.

I have mixed emotions about writing this review. I must admit that I learned a good bit about node.js and the content walked me step-by-step through with examples that had me coding from page 1. To say this is an early draft is denying that it must be a first draft. The majority (without exaggeration) of the code samples will not run due to differences in variable names throughout the code. Chapter 9 re: RESTful API has an introduction talking about using HTTP verbs (correctly) and then completely ignored them throughout the text. This is actually damaging to someone who doesn't know about REST as they believe they should have urls like "listUsers" to see the list of users and use a GET request to delete a user. Here's the thing...I gave it three stars because I learned more debugging the code examples and thinking through more appropriate approaches to the code examples. Almost makes me wonder if using deliberately buggy code would actually is a more effective way to teach coding topics (with an introduction to set the expectation).

Midnight Marriage by Lucinda Brant is a Georgian romance inspired by true historical events. In Midnight Marriage, a young girl of only twelve and a rebellious youth are wed in a ceremony conducted in the dark of night. Then the youth is whisked away by his father, and the young girl returned to her bed. She does not clearly remember the incident as she was drugged. Years later, as an adult, she meets him again but does not realize she is wed to him. He wishes to win her heart without her knowing of his noble title, and on his own merits. They wed again as adults. The rub comes when she learns his real identity and realizes that she has been deceived.

There is plenty of subterfuge in this tale, with several subplots skillfully woven throughout. This well-written historical romance clearly illustrates the author's talent for story-telling. It is engaging, authentic, and comfortably paced. The dialogue is believable and stays true to its period. The settings, outfits, and behavior of the characters are portrayed in delicious detail.

This is a book I would highly recommend to any readers who like a sweet historical romance rife with intrigue and complicated by societal expectations of the time.

One Georgian Historical Romance you have to read!

"Well if you like "Noble Satyr" book one of the Roxton series, you are going to love "Midnight Marriage" by Lucinda Brant. I seriously have devoured Lucinda as an author as her writing flows so well for a book of this era. Lucinda captivates you from the beginning and you won't be able to put this down.

This wonderful Georgian Historical Romance involves a captivating young lady with striking red hair, Deborah. She is a breath of fresh air and goes about her ways inwhich she shouldn't for a young lady unwed. Any gentlemen would indeed love to take her hand in marriage on her beauty alone. But she isn't interested in anyone for his noble status, she is waiting for mister right, a man that truely, deeply loves her and her alone.

Deborah continues to measure every man up to the man she dreams about in her sleep. Dreams of this perfect man that has invaded her nightdreams since she was 12. Does she find this man? Or Does she do the right thing and marry a man to uphold the families reputation.

I like that this book can be read as a stand alone book, but you will love it that much wanting to know more about the roxtons: "noble satyr is the 1st book of the series then "midnight marriage". And yay book three is in the making right now.

All i will say is that there is a midnight marriage.... sword fights and carriages pulled along coble stones with beautiful ladies dressed in gowns ready for a ball. Just as i thought Lucindas books couldnt get anybetter, this did. So sit down, relax with a
high tea and your best sunday dress on, loosing yourself in the world of the Roxton series. (Roxton is a Duke by the way). :)

The Rake Returns for his Bride

Impressive! Sequels aren't generally as powerful as the first book, but Lucinda Brant proves the exception.
This is a sequel to 'Noble Satyr'. Both books have a Heyeresque feel to them and as I said in the first books review, that is a good thing. The historical backdrop of Georgian England (Bath)/France (Paris) was still there (foreshadowings of the French Revolution and unrest), but the focus was on the H/H. The intrigue and plot turns were good- things are rarely what they seem. I like how the story begins with an inexplicable event and then unravels to explain it and the consequences of it. The characters were ones with which I could be sympathetic. It was nice to meet up with favorite characters from the first book and oh so bittersweet to see them as the older generation. -; But that is life.

A hot and steamy new version of the Olympian Gods

Oh my! Was this hot and steamy. This is a great new take on the stories of the Gods of Olympia. It is quite hot, with a dominating God of the Underworld and a Mistress Nymph. Two hot love stories!
Of course all of this while dealing with an overbearing mother who is hunting Persephone to marry her off to someone she doesn't love.
Then there is a prophesy of a Titan God wanting to kill Persephone. Can she survive this story and will she end with the one she desires?
Definitely a hot a steamy love story of not just one couple, but two. A quick little novella, that can get you all hot and bothered.

Good story

I enjoyed this story. It is a continuation from Book 1 and things really start to heat up. I do like Hades. There are 2 couples in this story that find love. I do like the other characters in the story too like poor Hermes and his rightful fear of Demeter, Persephone's mother. I could well imagine more evil coming from there in the future along with Helios and his hurt pride. It is a very imaginative story.

If you can get through the unconventional page order, the supplemental materials to the texts are quite good. The publisher was not able to exchange my copy. I would recommend buying this used, as it seems to be a recent print run that features this anomaly.

This book came quite promptly, and I began to use it for my class and realized something- all of the pages are out of order. They literally go: 5, 4, 7, 6, 9, 8, 11, etc. It's in good condition, but I'm not sure how far I'll make it through this book if I have to flip many times just to find the next page.

A highly original, profound and provocative theory

"Cold Intimacies" by Eva Illouz introduces a highly original, profound and provocative theory about how emotional and economic forces have found common interest in creating what she calls "emotional capitalism." The book is composed of three lectures that Ms. Illouz prepared for a series of presentations made at the Adorno Lectures in Frankfurt, Germany. The author's scholarly credentials are evident both in how she creates a very compelling argument and in her selective use of supporting documents; although somewhat densely written, the book's progression rewards the patient and studious reader with a number of invaluable insights and discoveries about contemporary society.

The first lecture recounts the history behind the rise of 'homo sentimentalis'. Ms. Illouz contends that the emotional style of the 20th century was shaped by the wide dissemination of Freudian theory in popular literature and the scientific management and human relations disciplines of Fordist America. Interestingly, Ms. Illouz believes that as communications skills became increasingly important to family and workplace, gender roles were slowly and subtly transformed with greater emphasis on the feminine traits of listening and cooperation. Eventually, this dynamic gave impetus to the feminist movement of the 1970s which in turn helped to codify the therapeutic regime into an array of publicly-funded family, mental and health services that we often take for granted today.

The second lecture describes how the creation of 'emotional capital' has fed myriad opportunities to the entrepreneurial class. For example, Ms. Illouz discusses the pervasiveness of the self-help movement in the mass media in the form of popular programs such as Oprah Winfrey's. Ms. Illouz recounts how the government first recognized post-traumatic stress disorder in the wake of the Vietnam War while pharmaceutical companies began to exploit patient's fears in order to sell remedies to manufactured illnesses. The author also argues that emotional intelligence has become an important currency to possess against the job insecurities of the post-Fordist era.

The third lecture positions Internet dating at the apex of emotional capitalism. Ms. Illouz describes a disembodied process that fuses the logic of consumerism, psychology and capitalist production processes. She suggests that the commodification of emotional self-introspection sacrifices the romantic notion of love at first sight to the efficiency of the market; she cites evidence that this model unfortunately tends to inculcate cynicism among end users because it inhibits the intuitive processes that usually bring partners together. Throughout this chapter, the reader is thoroughly impressed with Ms. Illouz's exceptional perception and intelligence as she skillfully deconstructs a cultural practice that, in light of her startling conclusions, might well be considered to be poorly understood by most other social scientists.
