Java 7, TDD, Concurrency, Polyglotism and Beyond

The authors of Well Grounded Java Developer promise the reader a book that will help modernize their knowledge base, brush up on vital techniques, and learn a new language or two. Promise delivered!

The book is split into four parts. First part covers Java 7 with its new features, such as NIO, Project Coin that comes with the diamond operator, string in switch statements and try-with-resources features. With lots of clear examples, written in both Java 6 and 7, the book showcases the new features and what problems they attempt to solve.

While part one covered new language features, part two focuses on universal practices and methodologies vital to any developer regardless of experience. Among the covered topics: TDD, CI, DI and the Java implementation of javax.inject, performance tuning, and modern concurrency.

Part three of the book is for those of us who believe in and/or want know about polyglotism. It provides an easy starting point to a number of languages without neither overwhelming novices, nor boring the experienced. The book has chapters on Scala, Groovy and Clojure. I bought this book a little over a week ago and now halfway through part three but did briefly skim thought the fourth part of the book. In this final part, the focus is on applying everything from previous three parts into creating a new project; it dedicates a whole chapter on TDD highlighting its paramount importance in modern software development. I will update the review with more details after finishing this part.

The best thing about this book is that it will inspire you to take part in the evolution of JVM ecosystem currently underway. After all, a well grounded java developer would :)

Very well balance in its breadth, somehow lacking in depth

If you have ever had the chance to witness the live performance of the authors, you know what a dynamic duo they are, taking a no nonsense, pragmatic and very down to earth attitude towards the perils and treasures of modern day Java development. It is easy to see that almost every page of 'The Well-Grounded Java Developer' is full of that energy.

The world of Java development is wide and this book is very well balanced in its selection of topics. In other words, almost any serious Java development team would would welcome a new developer well versed in the topics of this book, or to put it differently, unless you don't know much about most of those topics, do not consider yourself fit for a sharp and focused Java development team.

Having said that, the breadth and the depth of the Java and JVM world makes this book look like a relatively large tip of an iceberg. Most of the chapters provide a solid starting point, but for example, when it comes to performance analysis and evaluation, you will be much better off with an in-depth study such as Java Performance. Or when it comes to explaining IoC (Inversion of Control) and DI (Dependency Injection), you might feel like the exposition is made a little overcomplicated: you might be better off reading a proper tutorial on Guice or the relevant chapter from GWT in Action. I could make a similar set of comments regarding the concurrency chapter, but the added value of the book on that topic lies not in the summary introduction of Java concurrency, or modern features such as Fork/Join but rather the introduction of state-of-the-art paradigms such as actor based message passing systems, e.g. Akka. The same goes for book's exposition of modern languages that run on JVM, such as Groovy, Scala, and Clojure. It is certainly very difficult to do justice to these wildly different languages in a few short chapters, but the authors succeed in capturing and presenting very clearly the essential characteristics of those languages (albeit they do not focus one of the tenets of functional programming: easy composability thanks to pure functions). They provide the reader with the pragmatic reasons to try out these languages, and they don't refrain to evaluate each of those languages from many angles, such as the tooling support.

Apart from that, the chapter discussing the internals of class files and bytecode, even though not being very technically in-depth, nevertheless provides nice, self-contained overview of the topic just enough to be ocassionally useful for the daily needs of a not-too-specialized developer (and if you are a very specialized one, then you already know where to look for more technical details).

The chapter on TDD (Test Driven Development) is neither too detailed, nor too superficial, it gives solid grounding and rationale, that is if you are still skeptic about the advantages of unit testing, doing it properly, easily, most important of all, doing it right from the start. The examples using open source Mockito testing framework are not bad, but they would be brilliant if the authors did not refrain to demonstrate how Dependency Injection (e.g. Guice in particular) could be useful for unit tests, using a self-contained example (and I wonder if all of these could be even better presented using something like Jukito framework).

The rest of the book, particularly chapters related to Continuous Integration and building using Jenkins and Maven present just enough material to digest and coupled with code metrics, they hint at what a modern and healty development team should aim for. On the other hand, web development part will probably polarize the audience due to the selection of particular languages and frameworks, but I don't think any author can escape from this, given the volatility of the subject matter.

I can easily recommend this solid book to junior and senior developers to learn more or to strengthen their understanding of modern Java & JVM development practices. Not only will you be very well-grounded, enforcing a pragmatic approach with healthy look at the current and future developments, but also smile, or even chuckle at the use of witty & geeky humour, highlighting some important historical aspects of the Java world.

A good model for modern Java

The Well Grounded Java Developer is a welcome addition to the library of this work-a-day Java developer. I think I acquired this title for its promise to introduce features new to Java 7, which it does, but I find much more value than just this. As new concepts and techniques are introduced, the code samples demonstrate not only the new idea, but also the implementation of the various enhancements Java 7 provides. In other words, the code samples in this book look like Java 7 code from top to bottom, rather than Java 6 code with a sore thumb. Throughout the second section, you see code that uses the Path abstraction, multi-catch, underscores in number literals, and the other features that were introduced in Part 1.

Section 2 contains a lot of information that is new to me. As a Java developer incubated in a corporate setting, I have been nurtured to produce code, more than to understand it.

Chapter 3 discusses IoC and DI usefully. I am, just as the authors anticipated, one who probably heard the term Spring before I heard the term Inversion of Control. This chapter makes DI make sense as a design solution with many possible implementations, including Guice 3, the RI for JSR-330.

Chapter 4 discusses concurrency. The authors stress the inevitability of the rising importance of concurrency programming as multicore CPU's become standard. They discuss the advantages of immutability in the context of concurrency, foreshadowing the rise of functional programming styles and languages for the JVM. See for example the Callable interface, which they describe as "the closest that Java 7 gets to having functions as first-class objects." They laud java.util.concurrent, and elucidate Atomic and Locks. They also introduce ConcurrentHashMap, and suggest we always favor it over HashMap. And they present fork/join with "a simple example" that I had to read a half-dozen times to grok. Probably just me.

Chapter 5 discusses Class files and bytecode. It steps through the class loading process. MethodHandles are introduced as an answer to certain shortcomings of the Callable interface. The constant pool was a brand new concept for me, as was javap, the tool to use for examining these constants. There is a section on Bytecode, which is "an intermediate representation of a program - halfway between human readable source code and machine code." This representation takes the form of a list of operation codes ("opcodes") that may take arguments. Each opcode is represented by a single byte, "hence the name bytecode." Opcodes are organized into logical groups by function, such as "Load and Store" and "Arethmetic." Java 7 introduces a new opcode - a first! The new opcode is invokedynamic, which allows deferral of method selection to runtime. This is a JVM thing for dynamic languages; Java-the-language doesn't emit invokedynamic. This is another reminder that the future of the JVM is polyglot, with increasing support for dynamic languages.

Chapter 6 discusses performance tuning. The topic of this sermon is, "You have to measure. You can't tune properly without measuring." It discusses some metrics, such as latency and utilization. It also mentions transforming bytecode as it is loaded in order to attach tuning instrumentation. This chapter doesn't provide a lot of code samples, and I don't know how I individually will apply much of it. It's an interesting read, though. The imperative to utilize caches closest to the CPU is demonstrated visually. There's a section on Garbage Collection, in which Areas of memory (Eden, Survivor, Tenured and PermGen) are defined, as well as the jmap and VisualVM tools for viewing memory contents. Escape analysis is a neat idea, where a method is assessed as a candidate to create its dependencies on the stack, rather than on the heap, if its local reference variables are used only inside the method. The G1 collector is a radical departure from previous collector models. It learns how much collection it can expect to accomplish in a given amount of time (the pause), and plans its workload according to your pause goals of duration and frequency. Finally, Just-in-Time compilation is discussed, with an introduction to compilation strategies. Inlining methods is described as "eliminating the call to the inlined method, and instead placing the code of the called method inside the caller." The compiler uses runtime statistics to determine where to apply this strategy.

I have perused Part 3, and I look forward to reading it and Part 4 thoroughly.

This book is an excellent resource for Java developers who are capable of enthusiasm about programming. The book is of no value to the reader who is new to Java. I would highly recommend the book to a curious colleague who is fundamentally sound and insists on enjoying the next few years creating code for the JVM.

In this picaresque, harrowing, humorous yet deeply sad excursion through his dark-starred youth, Bunker (No Beast So Fierce, etc.)--arguably the most renowned convict writer in America--serves as both participant in and witness to the mid-century carnival of L.A. crime immortalized by James Ellroy. The bright, mischievous product of a Depression-era broken home, Bunker was raised in a worsening succession of institutions. In this account, he initially explores how the violence he experienced in these places directed him toward criminality, culminating in a stretch in San Quentin at age 17. These experiences instilled in Bunker the Convict Code, which boils down to: Don't ever snitch, and respond to all threats with uncompromised ferocity. This ferocity made him notorious among his jailers and peers. Bunker details experiences among pimps, prostitutes, gamblers, thieves and L.A.'s nascent gang and drug culture, plus flirtations with affluent society, in the person of a benefactor, Louise Wallis, a producer's wife for whom he worked as a chauffeur and who nurtured his literary dreams. He captures the kaleidoscope of postwar California's underworld with a disturbing seductiveness reminiscent of Ellroy. Bunker ultimately returned to prison for two long periods due to relatively minor infractions; he describes the dangers of California prisons, greatly worsened in the 1960s by racial polarization. Though out of prison now for 25 years, Bunker remembers the experience well: these chapters, as in his novels, present a uniquely searing portrait of life behind bars. Although the memoir ends abruptly with the 1974 acceptance for publication by W.W. Norton of one of Bunker's novels, it remains a thought-provoking and richly re-created tale of a career criminal. Having served a total of 18 years in prison, Bunker has made a career out of being an ex-felon in the decades since his release. His four works of fiction (No Beast Too Fierce, Animal Factory, Little Boy Blue, and Dog Eat Dog) describe adolescents in trouble with the law--as he was. This memoir, his first nonfiction book, has stories similar to those in the other volumes, but this time the stories are apparently true. Bunker is sufficiently like the juvenile offenders of today to make his self-revelations hit home. The legal system that he describes, however, goes back several decades. Readers who are interested in how things used to be will find substance here; those who are looking for insights into today's correctional facilities may be misled. Bunker writes well, and his hard-boiled episodes can hold the readers' attention. Devotees will probably like this new volume; others may want to pass.

Bunker, who played the part of "Mr. Blue" in Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, first went to prison in 1950 at the age of 17. By the time his prison career had ended, he had served 18 years in three terms. He had also accumulated a substantial store of prison experience and written several harrowing novels detailing life in California's toughest prisons. In his memoir, Bunker recounts the criminal world that attracted him, beginning with his impoverished youth. In fact, his poverty status earned him the title of "white nigger" by prison personnel, who, accordingly, restricted his privileges. The wife of a major Hollywood producer became his benefactor. But Bunker's initial response was to get drawn deeper into the Hollywood underworld. Through it all, this intelligent though recalcitrant criminal found solace in his writing talent. His memoir reflects the real story behind the fictionalized accounts, including reflections on the racial transitions of the California prison system. When Bunker was initially imprisoned at San Quentin, whites accounted for 70 percent of the population. Upon his release, the ratio of whites to minorities had reversed, substantially changing the prison culture and environment. Vernon Ford

Well done, but not his best work

I'm a huge fan of Bunker's fictional work. _Dog Eat Dog_ is among the the most powerful works of fiction (irrespective of genre) I've ever read.
_Felon_ is relatively comprehensive, describing Bunker's troubled youth and adulthood in a series of increasingly tough institutions; it details his experiences as a student, parolee, fugitive, prisoner and author.
I had two minor bones to pick: in this day and age, a Father effectively abandoning his child to the arms of an institution seems nearly incomprehensible. Perhaps I didn't understand the true motivation, but wished there had been a more suitable explanation for his father's willingness to pawn off his increasingly troubled child to any home that would have him.
I also wished that the book had covered more of Bunker's life in the last twenty-odd years. There was no explanation of Bunker encountering Tarantino or similar events that would seem to be interesting and unique. The book effectively ends with Bunker still in prison, being notified that one of his novels has been accepted by Norton for publication.
Nonetheless, I devoured the entire book in a rush and would recommend it highly. It is a worthwhile description of a complex (if atypical) life.

Good, but troubling

Bunker's definitely a felon, a bad person who has hurt others
throughout his life. But he can write, and he opens a window to a ruthless underground jungle few of us ever see. I sure wouldn't want him as a friend (few have escaped that role unscathed) but the books are compelling. Somewhat reminiscent of Bukowski's self-justifying assault on convention: highly entertaining if taken in the right spirit.

I was impressed by Mr. Bunker's writing skill. Apparently he is the only living author who knows the difference between "trusty" and "trustee".
Some of the writing is self-serving, which is to be expected, but the story as a whole is interesting, intelligent, and informational. I personally resented Mr. Bunker's constant insistence that he was a criminal because the "system" had made him one. He was a criminal because he failed to control his impulses--unless it was in his interest to do so. Even if his upbringing did not include such lessons, his experiences should have taught him that certain actions have certain consequences and it would be a good idea not to keep repeating them.
This was my first in-depth look into a life of crime that I thought was believable. All in all, Mr. Bunker is to be commended for giving readers the opportunity to see inside jails, prisons, reformatories, etc. and the people who inhabit them.

An AMAZING work...but there is much more to this story...

Graham Hancock has done another marvelous job drawing connections among ancient information in a level headed manner, and has presented a brilliantly coherent framework that explains many enigmas.

It is sadly unsurprising that the largely conservative and ossified mainstream always puts up heavy resistance to this information; as this is all too often the case to any challenger of the status quo among academia.

What we've learned from history is that hardly anyone ever learns from history.

To have a deeper understanding of the material I highly recommend reading Fingerprints of the Gods if you have not yet, as this book will make much more sense with that background knowledge. It does well enough on its own, and presents a brilliant case that a planetary impact and the global floods/cataclysm that resulted was the main culprit in nearly wiping out an advanced civilization in pre-history, however the weight of this revelation is much heavier if you are acquainted with the thick foundation already laid out in Fingerprints of the gods.

The two key elements missing from Fingerprints were the smoking gun that caused the deluge and conclusive evidence of the advanced civilizations presence thousands of years before what we thought was the advent of civilization. This book has both in spades.

Gobekli Tepe is a massive megalithic site crafted by highly skilled stone workers over 10,0000 years ago, and Gunung Padang, another fascinating site in Indonesia, is looking like it might be even older.

The ongoing studies and debate surrounding the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis are analysed and simplified. They seem to have hit the ice caps that covered North America and Northern Europe, leaving little if any craters but causing massive floods, fires, and so on. The evidence is clear enough, and made even more profound if we keep in mind the countless ancient "myths" around the globe that give detailed descriptions of the event. Resistance to the hypothesis, and even outright dismissal by the more dogmatic and conservative sectors of the scientific community, is always to be expected.

Resistance to paradigm-shattering information has always occurred, even in the scientific arena. This is, however, only one piece of an incredibly important puzzle that we desperately need to figure out if we are to pull ourselves out of the mess we are in.

Hancock's notion of a "species with amnesia" is far, far more serious than perhaps even he realized. There is ongoing research, conducted by Tony Wright and others, indicating the development of our neural system is literally compromised and has been progressively reverting to a more primitive mammalian type. Hancock is aware and a fan of the research but it gets curiously omitted here, possibly because of the overwhelming task it would be integrating it into the book, and making its focus too broad. Though it fits in perfectly with his research on psychedelics - one of the main approaches ancient cultures have employed throughout the entire world for millenia in order to address and treat our condition - and because of the obvious gaps it fills in regards to the nature of these "magicians of the gods".

Were they really regarded as nearly having god-like status because of their superior technology and craftsmanship, or was there more to it than that? If we take the ancients for their word, then they had cognitive abilities far beyond what even we would consider normal. You would be hard pressed to find ancient accounts, or even accounts of modern tribal groups in the amazon and elsewhere, that believe their ancestors were more primitive. They virtually always regarded them as more advanced, and not just technologically. Cognitively and spiritually. They knew a lot about consciousness and sought to preserve that knowledge while keeping the fire of civilization kindled amidst the chaos of the cataclysm. We can conclude they did very well because all across the world can be found ancient medicinal and consciousness methods of all sorts (yoga, meditation, alchemy, shamanism, herbalism, etc. ). Even though many have devolved over time.

But we don't simply have to take the ancients word for it about this. There is a mountain of evidence for this scenario, which should not come as a surprise since nearly every bright man or women throughout the ages has deemed humanity as being virtually insane. Our culture and civilization is a reflection of our dysfunctional state of mind. The ancients almost universally regarded their ancestors as more advanced, and do not talk about progressive advancements. Is this just because of the shattering effects of the cataclysms at the end of the last ice age, or is there more to it than that? Why then do they also speak of mans nature degrading even before the cataclysm? And why do they even engage in various techniques and medicines (psychedelics, meditation, fasting, sleep deprivation, and so on) to address this condition at all?

Our brain is the most complex and chemically sensitive piece of tissue in the known universe. Perhaps it is no coincidence that it evolved in the African tropics, in a symbiotic relationship with one of the most complex biochemical environments/foods on the planet. Like the countless "myths" about the cataclysm at the end of the last ice age, these "myths" of a lost paradisaical golden age of human consciousness may have some basis as well. The food we were eating had incredibly complex biochemistry and was intimately involved in the development and operating environment of our brain for millenia. You would not expect to be able to build a working vehicle out of materials completely irrelevant to it's original design and development specifications...yet we assume our brain will develop and function normally on literally "junk" food. Why is this simple engineering logic so non-existent in our society?

Perhaps we are just so deluded at this point that we are blind to our own condition. A species with amnesia, literally.

Research Tony Wrights book Return to the Brain of Eden. You will not be disappointed. The forward by Dennis McKenna, the legendary brother of Terence McKenna, explains the gist well enough to give you a taste.

I'd normally feel strange plugging someones book in a review on another book, but the connections between these two areas is agonizingly obvious and very few seem to be drawing the pieces together. Both Hancock's work, Wright's, and others have changed my life in ways I can't even begin to download into such a feeble medium as language, and I'd like to share that experience with all of you as we collectively journey forward on this mind boggling ride we are on.

Light at the end of the tunnel

I am a huge Graham Hancock fan, having read most of his books. I appreciate who he is and what he stands for, his holistic approach to consciousness issues and fierce commitment to uncover what is hidden is unparalleled in my opinion. I couldn't wait for this book after reading fingerprints. After the first few chapters I was becoming disappointed. I felt like I was reading scientific paper after scientific paper about scientific disciplines I had very little interest in. I wondered who Graham was writing to, it certainly wasn't the general public, maybe to a geological convention. It was too repetitive, and too technical, too deep of a foundation and too much that never tied into the rest of the material until much later in the book., I understood the key point he was making after the first chapter, but he kept beating the dead horse chapter after chapter. I thought it would never end. IMO, the author could have made this a much more readable book by summarizing half of the technical dialogue of the beginning several chapters and tying it into the excellent and fascinating material in the second half of the book. He could have put the majority of the case studies and biographies etc. into the appendices for those that need to see the multiple supporting arguments. It was not my favorite Graham book, but could be the most important. He masterfully weaves all the tangents and new evidence together to make a compelling point.

No 'spacemen' stuff

Hancock out did himself on this one. I read this with and open mind and a laptop at hand. So when sighted 'facts' or opinions of others', and he does this a lot, I double checked the context of these citations made. I must say Hancock knows his stuff. Of course he has an opinion, I wouldn't call it an agenda, however the book does a nice job of presenting an objective discussion of his conjecture. I've been reading his stuff for years, and tend to give merit to his theory, but you shouldn't have to be a believer to find this book exciting if you're at all interested in socio-anthropology or alike. No off-the-wall stuff, or spaceship; just the most recent science that supports his point of view. Certainly, other scientists'may have differing opinions, but that's what science is supposed to be. An honest discussion of ALL reasonable possibilities.

If you don't know who Agrippa was, you shouldn't be reading this review, unless you're a librarian who's been asked to buy the volume. Do an author search for "Agrippa occult" and start there.
Now, assuming that you know who Agrippa (1486-1535) was, and roughly what his Occult Philosophy was, let's talk about this volume.
This is a scholarly critical edition. The copious annotations do not so much explain the text as tell you what Agrippa is quoting or referring to, so you can look up more texts. The introduction is functional, but not terribly helpful to the nonspecialist. On the other hand, when I wrote my book on Agrippa, this thing was a constant and trusty companion; boy am I ever glad I shelled out for this!
Agrippa's book itself is obscure and difficult, but at the same time it is the seminal attempt to develop a philosophical framework for magic as a practice. If you just want to read the book, read it in English (buy the Llewellyn edition) unless your Latin is stunningly good. So if you don't already know the book well, you shouldn't be spending money on this.
The editing is meticulous, including constant explications of Agrippa's many references and sources. There is a wonderful index and bibliography, making the volume exceptionally useful -- Agrippa himself is deliberately confusing and at times seems disorganized. On top of everything else, the editor has included angle braces and further notes so that we get a complete edition of the Juvenile Draft (1510) woven into the final edition (1531/33). I can't say enough good things about the edition.
Every library with a serious early modern collection should have this. Brill's books are extremely expensive, of course, but they are permanent. The paper is acid-free, the binding is very toughly stitched, and so forth. If you shell out for this text, you will still have it a long time from now. If you are not in control of a library's budget, though, you'd better try to get your librarian to order this.
In short, this is a volume for a library, a specialist, or a wealthy Latinist. If you are wealthy enough to afford this and just want a cool edition, bear in mind that you can sometimes find Agrippa's _Opera_ in early 17th C editions for about what this volume costs --- no critical material, of course, but pretty. If you have good reason to want a critical edition, though, this one is not likely to be superseded.

Finally a scholarly edition of this classic.

This book should be at the top of the reading list for anyone interested in Western occultism or magic.
The original Latin text of Agrippa's classic is presented along with critical apparatus clearly showing variant readings in the editions. Includes a great introduction (in English) with a detailed analysis of Agrippa's sources and as well as an insightful and in-depth analysis of Agrippa's extensive 1533 expansion and revision of the text. Complete with helpful bibliographies and indices.
The only disappointment I had was the fact that this edition does not include Agrippa's lengthy recantation, which was included in the 1533 edition.
This is one of the most expensive books I've ever bought, but worth the price, especially for those with a command of Renaissance Latin.

Quick, find something else to read.

Love those larger than life, brawling, foul-mouthed, misogynistic, stereotypical jerk Aussies? Well this is the book for you. The main disappointment with this book is that I actually read it. I think I finished it only because I wanted there to be something, anything, redeeming about it. Didn't happen.
