Laura van Dernoot Lipsky is a trauma social worker, educator, and consultant. She is also the founder and director of a Spanish-language preschool and grade school enrichment program that offers an environmental and social-justice curriculum. Connie Burk is the executive director of the Northwest Network of Bisexual, Trans, Lesbian and Gay Survivors of Abuse.

The most intelligent, comprehensive *and* down-to-earth and practical book on compassion fatigue I've ever read

The most intelligent, comprehensive *and* down-to-earth and practical book on compassion fatigue (this author refers to it as Trauma Exposure Response) I’ve ever read, and I have read more than a dozen. It is also the only general book on the topic in which references to animals is made consistently. There are many books on how to cope with stress, burnout and compassion fatigue, but none that address the root causes of how the issue of compassion fatigue fits into the big picture of global issues of oppression. If you only buy one book on compassion fatigue, get this one! I taught compassion fatigue classes for animal care workers for seven years, and am currently designing a new class for healing practitioners. This book will be required reading.

This is the only complete edition available of one of the most famous and most useful books of commercial art ever printed. George Bickham, a noted engraver and calligrapher, first compiled this work back in the 1740’s, from the best specimens of 24 of the leading calligraphers of his day. Unfortunately, Bickham published his work in 52 separate parts, over a period of eight years. In Bickham’s own day it was difficult to get a complete set of the Universal Penman; today, apart from this edition, it is virtually impossible, for most surviving 18th-century copies lack certain rare plates. This Dover edition, however, contains every plate which Bickham engraved, and each is reproduced from an original so remarkably clear that these modern plates are actually better than most 18th-century originals.
This book contains more than 210 full-page plates, each crammed full of beautiful and interesting material. To list only part of its contents:
• Over 125 pictorial scenes, clear copperplates of drinking scenes, family scenes, commerce, rustic festivities, duels, more.
• Over 200 script pictures, male and female heads, busts, cherubs, griffins, birds, fish, etc.
• 19 complete alphabets: round hand, round text, Old English, florid, foliated, and others.
• 275 lettered specimens, overlaid with fine flourishes, swirls, spirals, featherings, volutes, etc.
• Over 100 panels, frames, cartouches, and other effects
Over 950 lettered specimens, with thousands of words that can be lifted right off for reproduction.
Individual items in this book are permission-free, and may be used (up to ten items per use) without permission, payment, or credit line. Calligraphers find Bickham the best source for English round-handwriting; commercial artists, advertising directors, and designers all find Bickham first-rate as a source for immediately usable pictures and script that suggests antiquity, quality, and reliability. Craftspeople have found it rich in unusual ideas and motifs, while libraries and art historians find it a wonderful collection of 18th-century pictures illustrating art-life.

A Must Read classic

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing." This advice is true in any profession. Decide a course of action and you will be half way there. These timeless pieces of sage advice are capture in the seminal work of Dale Carnegie, Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business.
First published in 1926, Dale Carnegie spent a life in pursuit of man's potential. More than mere positive thinking, it is a book of ideas. Specifically, Carnegie states that "only an ignoramus is positive about everything". However putting positive energy behind what you say will make anyone shine.

This book centers on the importance of public speaking. You may say that you already are a good speaker or don't like to speak at all. This may be true but the art of influencing other is in sharing ideas through speaking.
Good speakers continuously harness the power of communication and presentation. These communicators often "speak with such intensified and exalted naturalness that you auditors will never dream that they had been trained. For instance, "a good window does not call attention to itself. It merely lets in the light. A good speaker is like that. He is so natural that he hearers never notice his manner of speaking; they are conscious only of his matter."

Best Book For Young Dino Lovers

We bought this book as a reward for my 3 year old dino loving son. It has quickly become his favortie book and he can recite it word for word. Besides How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight, only this book has made him respond this way. This is by far one of the best books I have come across for young children that you will enjoy reading to your child. It has great flow and fun pages that your child will want to point to while you read. I don't get bored reading it and we find new things in the pictures to talk about almost every time it comes off the shelf, which is daily. You won't be disappointed with this purchase. Kudos to the writer and the artist.

Just What I Was Looking For!

I spent alot of time browsing through books on Amazon, looking for a good bedtime story for my nephew, who is almost 5 and who loves dinosaurs. I'm so glad this is the one I ordered! He stays actively engaged and attentive because of both the rhyming and the illustrations (he loves to spot the dinosaur "hiding" in strategic places throughout the book). And at the very end the book speaks right to the reader, so the reader becomes the final step in finding the dinosaur - very fun! I also love the picture of the boy and his dinosaur on the last page - a great image as you're getting tucked in to go to sleep.

Alex is a former Marine and psychotherapist and uses his experience of the military and human nature to inform his work. Another Frightening Masterpiece !!!!

I am so excited….I just got my Project Series fix !!!! Alex Lukeman has again kept me on the edge of my seat, sweaty palms and heart pounding as I read his ninth in the wonderful Project Series called Black Rose.

When reading the last sentence, I closed my eyes, thinking back to the day I read the first release in the series White Jade. I walked to my handy lap top and saw I reviewed White Jade on Amazon in 2011 and smiled as I read my review.To quote , When I began White Jade, I could see this was going to take me to places I loved. Murder, foreign intrigue, FBI, CIA, plots and plenty of action. So after eight more books to his credit, Alex Lukeman has given me this same feeling over and over; it has remained true, it has never gone away in all these years!

The only difference with White Jade to Black Rose is the knowing the characters he has brought to this story, At first they were strangers, now dear friends I worry about as much as a family member.

Elizabeth Harker, has nerves of steel, showing great strength, fortitude, and extreme resilience in the world she lives in. Having ‘the ear’ to the president adds to the story along with her team of hard working individuals adding the spice and flavor. Stephanie her hard working assistant and ‘hacker extraordinaire’ , Nick, Selena, Lamont and Ronnie round out this wonderful team .

You must start from the beginning to ‘really appreciate’ the essence of this although the books are stand alone…..For folks like me though, with a bit of the ADD gene, the series one through nine will not disappoint in any way. So if you like books Like Indanna Jones meets James Bond, and have a hankering to see exotic places….This series is a must!!

High five again Alex……Cannot wait for the tenth!!!!!

Another great book from an amazing author

As always, Alex Lukeman never fails to bring you a great book, I just can't seem to get enough. I could go on reading his books forever. I get lost in the stories and the characters. Waiting for the next book, hope it will be soon. The story brought a lot of education to the readers regarding geography and historical facts. Thank you Mr. Lukeman, great wealth of information, great read.

Another Great One

Another great addition to a great series. It is well written, plot is fast paced, descriptive scenes and great characters. After nine books, we've seen the characters evolve and developed an attachment to them and look forward to what comes next for them and the challenges they face, both personally and professionally. As always, looking forward to the next book.
