A slow-paced ending to an epic series; Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta's final entry in the Young Jedi Knight series focuses more on redemption and tying up loose ends with the final story arc and characters (mostly Anja Gallandro, Czethros, Black Sun, etc), making this one of the least action-packed YJK novels while still managing to end the series on a positive note that readers will miss if they move on to the New Jedi Order. This book and series are a must for anyone who has read the New Jedi Order series, Swarm War trilogy, and DEFINITELY anyone who has read the Fate of the Jedi Series (Caedus..........need I say more?).

An excellent finish to the saga

After many adventures and many friendships, not to mention fourteen novels, the much loved saga of the Young Jedi Knights has finally come to an end. I greeted this book with a measure of respect, and also a touch of sadness. I expected it to be one the best yet, and I was not disapointed. For a brief summery, Anja finally admits to herself that she is addicted to Andris Spice, (a type of drug) and, though she is trying to quit, she finally can't stand it any more. She steals Zekk's ship, The Lightning Rod, and heads for the spice mines of Kessal to get a few more doses to "tie her over" while she figures out what to do next. Naturally, the Young Jedi Knights go after her, and they eventually track her down to Crystal Reef, Calimari, and that's where the real adventure starts... In short, this book provided a fine close to this final trilogy, with (at last) an awesome confrontation with Czethros and Black Sun, as well as coming to terms with the question of Anja's adiction to spice. Speaking of Anja, this book really seemed to redeem her. I didn't like her at all at first, because of how much of a jerk she always is, and because it seemed that she was trying to replace Tenel Ka, whom I have always liked. She was better in this book, because she was at last admitting her mistakes to herself and to others and trying to set things right. Also, while this book solved the delima of this trilogy, there were many loose ends left unsatisfied, and it didn't seem to bring true closure to the whole series, except in the last few pages. For instance, what ever happened to Raynar after the death of his father? He was never one of my favorite characters anyway, but it should have been Zekk who was left out, not Raynar. Now that Zekk is no longer a villian and his healing processes are through, we really don't need him anymore except to be The Boy That Jaina Likes. I was never to enthusiastic about that boring relationship. Jacen and Tenel Ka were much better. Also, what happened to Raaba? Is she ever going to come back? They should have brought her back in this book. And I would have prefered it if all the Young Jedi Knights were together in their final adventure, instead of just Jaina and Lowie getting to fight the last battle. Anja, Jacen, Zekk, and Tenel Ka are instead all under Crystal Reef destroying the Andris, and while this has as much to do with the main plot as anything else, they are not all together and that is the point. Other than that though, there is nothing else wrong with this excellent book, and I would recommend this series to any Star Wars fan.

Great ending to another trilogy of the Young Jedi Knights

This book was great! Finally Anja has admitted to herself that she is addicted to Andris Spice. She also realizes that Jacen and Jaina are her friends and doesn't want to hurt them any more. It was about time that the New Republic recognize the Young Jedi Knights for all the work that they had done for them. My only regret is that there is a rumor going around the Book World that this book will be the last book that Kevin Anderson and Rebecca Moesta write on the Young Jedi Knights series. I hope that that is not true. I'm sure that every fan wants to see what will happen to the Jedi Knights relationships and what they will do in the future. So Kevin Anderson and Rebecca Moesta, if you happen to read this review, please don't stop writing these books! They're great and I'm sure every fan wants to see what the Jedi Knights will do with they're futures, not to mention they're relationships. Anyway, this book is awsome and if you want to read it you better hurry because I got the last book that they had in stock.

Interpretive possibilities

This text seems to be increasing in popularity among academics, and it does offer some interesting perspectives on the issue of mid-century (the 19th, that is) labor reform. You can view this text in its original format from Google books as well as on your kindle. (It is found in The Atlantic Monthly's 1861 collection, I think -- which Google has scanned.) I think it elicits a number of interpretive possibilities despite its short length, and is worth a read to those people who don't tire of conventional openings and a somewhat-tidy wrap-up. (Although I did read somewhere that Rebecca Harding Davis was forced by the AM publishers to alter some parts of her original text to make it more suitable for the audience.)

You will not, perhaps unfortunately, actually learn much about iron mills. This story is rather a type of conversion narrative that focuses on two characters' struggles in that particular "life." Those looking for a technical or otherwise informational book regarding mills/industry--or even working-class lifestyles--should look outside this one. But since this story is so short, it wouldn't hurt to look here *as well*.

Poverty as poetry

When one thinks of socially conscious realism in American literature, what usually springs to mind is the heyday of the “muckrakers”of the early 20th century. Before famous authors like Jack London, Upton Sinclair, or Frank Norris turned their attention to societal ills, however, the trail had already been blazed by a host of earlier writers now largely forgotten by the American public. One such author was Rebecca Harding Davis, a prolific writer for social change. Her novella Life in the Iron Mills, originally published in the April 1861 edition of the Atlantic Monthly magazine, is now considered a pioneering work in American realism. In the long run, however, ground-breaking works don’t always translate into enduring works, and Life in the Iron Mills has not passed the century and a half since its publication entirely unscathed.

As the title indicates, Davis’s novella describes the living and working conditions of laborers employed at an iron mill somewhere in the American South. Hugh Wolfe is a “puddler” at the mill. Despite the back-breaking toil of his occupation, Hugh has the mind of a dreamer and the soul of an artist. He lives with his father and cousin Deborah, who also works in the mill. Deborah, a hunchback, is in love with Hugh, though he offers no indication of reciprocal feelings other than friendly or familial kindness. Both are Welsh immigrants, and their dialogue is transcribed in their native accent, which is sometimes hard to decipher with its sprinkling of apostrophes and ubiquitous pronoun “hur” [you]. One day when Deborah brings Hugh his lunch at the mill, the laborers are visited by the mill owner and some of his higher class colleagues. At first they observe the iron workers much as if they were watching animals in a zoo. Then, as a conversation develops between Hugh and the visitors, Hugh’s mind is opened to the idea that his life could possibly consist of more than just slaving in the mills day after day.

For today’s reader, the problem with Life in the Iron Mills is that the perspective that Davis offers into the lives of the working poor isn’t markedly different from that of these upper class visitors to the mill. Unlike later depictions of similar subject matter such as Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, Jack London’s “The Apostate,” or even Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape, the reader never feels like he’s amongst the workers, sharing their experience of filth and toil. Instead, it feels like we’re looking down from above, as if they were subjects in an experiment. This is heightened by the language that Davis uses, which is overly flowery and poetic for her topic. Though she talks a lot about smoke and ash and sweat, you never really feel it, because it’s all expressed in a prose style better suited to describing some sylvan grove. Though Davis may have turned the corner into realism by tackling such gritty subject matter, her writing stye is still very much rooted in the romanticism of the past. Her attempts to introduce religious imagery, offering up Hugh as a modern-day Christ, feel forced and overblown. The ending is as gratuitously drawn out as any melodramatic opera. As later realists would come to learn, who needs all these dramatic and linguistic flourishes when the drama of real life is enough?

Life in the Iron Mills may have shocked in its day, but today’s audience is likely to find it a bit tame. Davis was decades ahead of her time with this attempt at naturalism, but it’s still just an attempt, and a precursor of better things to come.

A good source of ideas that need filtering

Street Smarts is one of the better trading books out there. However, as another reviewer rightly bemoans, the explanations are too short. The main problem with a lot of these patterns is that most require a heavy amount of filtering. The Turtle Soup strategy will kill you in a trending market, it needs filtering even in non-trending markets. It seems to have some promise in a high ADX environment only when used as a continuation signal and not a reversal. I tried it on the 5 minute S&P's. Trust me, I had to do a lot to make this pattern work. So much that I discarded the idea of using it. Also beware, some time frames are very bad for the anti technique. I know this is not how it is supposed to work, but from what I have seen there are certain intraday timeframes in the S&P which are just horrible for technical indicators. Play around, you'll see. The range contraction patterns have promise, however the authors neglect to tell you that most should be traded in the direction of the trend. I like the statistical studies in the back of the book. LBR is not a mechanical trader, she has mechanical patterns but she decides when to implement them. Do not trade these patterns mechanically unless you want to get ripped to shreds. Hence I refer back to what I have said from the start, the patterns in this book need much filtering!

Overpriced to impress beginners

This ridiculously expensive book (booklet?), mostly outdated and primitive-looking charts with oversized text and plenty of useless appendices to fill more pages contains a collection of multi-day (aka "swing" trading) entry and exit recipes that are claimed by the authors to work well not only with futures --as most charts in the book are from futures-- but intraday and with stocks. You can find formulaic trading recipes and advice like this here and there and in other books without having to pay [item price]. When you learn how to trade, you will find that no one needs any magical recipes to go in or out of trades and that in the end anything works as well as anything else if you know how to do it appropriately. But if they told you this, you wouldn't buy the book. Each chapter contains a small description of a trading recipe and a set of ilustrations of the recipe, each one filling a whole page with three sentences and a chart that looks like it was taken from a snapshot of a computer screen in the early 1980's. Then, at the end of the charts sections, there are a few comments in dialog form.
Linda Raschke's comments on some of the magic formulas are more interesting and more believable than Connors'. She claims to be a daily scalper in the futures markets. Some of the materials in her old Web site were interesting too, though she seems to be spending a lot of time working the trading fair educational circuit. Is she making a great deal of money trading all of these finger-counting strategies, entering after 20 bars here and there and puting a stop just above yesterday's high when the ADX is under 20% and the S&P are in an inside day combining historical volatility with Tony Crabel's NR7, etc, etc, or does she need to supplement her income teaching seminars for $1500 an evening? As for the other author, the real "advanced" strategy Larry Connors knows well is how to make money out of the miriads of hopeful wannabes that overpay for his expensive books and for his TradingMarkets.com web site, which costs more than a thousand dollars per year and is just a hook to get the members to buy more overpriced "trading services", $5,000.00 tutorials, "ultimate" courses, fantastic techniques, videotapes, etc., etc. Just think of this before you dish out your money to this guy: if he knew any "advanced" trading strategies to make real money he wouldn't be peddling his overpriced merchandise for a living. Wouldn't it be nicer to live as a rich trader, trading from your yatch your great advanced strategies for millions, instead of busting your rear running a Web site in downtown LA to trap yet another fool who thinks that perhaps this new advisory service will "make him" money? Let Connors first show that he can make millions trading before he calls his strategies "advanced". Obviously, they are just not advanced enough to make him rich --though he will be soon, if you pay him [item price] for this mostly charts collection of unfocused advice. If you still feel you have to learn the basics from the popular self-appointed "gurus", do it at least with a minimal expense.

Loved the book. Recommend it for serious traders

First of all let me state that you must already have a certain concept of trading and trading terminology to benefit from this book. You must also understand and believe the importance of chart reading as a trader to fully understand what the authors are saying. I believe some of the negativity written about this books is because the readers didnt understand trading concepts as applied to chart reading or disregard chart reading altogether as a valid tool to trading.
With this said, I have to say that the book was beneficial for me as a short term trader. It helped me find patterns that I would've otherwise overlooked before reading this book. Let me also add that the turtle soup and turtle soup plus one does not really apply 100%, per say, to the fast momentum stocks I screen for. However, reading those strategies helped fine tune my entry and exit strategies when I enter a trade. It did so by helping me look for intraday swings and the probabilities of possible price action for next day trading based on what happened to the price at the close. If anything, the book helped me alot because it opened my mind to other trading possibilities and thus form ideas for myself.
Like another reader said, the authors are not mechanical traders. Thus these patterns and strategies should not be taken mechanically. Instead one should trade cautiously using discretionary stops. The book will only teach you about patterns in the market that have a high probable outcome. It's up to the individual to trade the patterns and use protective stops in the case the anticipated move goes wrong.

I have Vladimir Dobrushkin as a professor for this course at Brown, and he is amazing. He is very thorough, and is extremely intelligent. This book will provide you with a comprehensive education in the field of differential equations, and is much better than other textbooks on the market.

Can't go wrong with this book, Dobrushkin

This book, an update of the vaunted Boyce & DiPrima work, has been a seminal part of my differential equations education. Prof. Dobrushkin is a wonderful mentor to many at Brown, and he applies a similar style of mentorship/apprenticeship to this course. I'd highly recommend the textbook to any advanced math student looking to expand his/her differential equations skill set.

Cesare Borgia briefly employed Leonardo da Vinci as military architect and engineer between 1502 and 1503.

In addition, a highly useful Appendix contains "A Collection of Formulas" for determining the load per inch deflection of linear springs, the load per radian rotation of rotational springs, the natural frequencies of simple systems, the longitudinal and torsional vibration of uniform beams, the transverse or bending vibrations of uniform beams, and the vibrations of rings, membranes, and plates.
When Mechanical Vibrations was first published in 1934, it was a pioneering work in a field which had just been introduced in America's technical schools. In fact, the author wrote it to assist him in teaching the subject at Harvard. "During the life of the book," he says, "from 1934 on, the art and science of engineering has grown at an astonishing rate and the subject of vibration has expanded with it." Professor Den Hartog's constant revisions have kept his book at the forefront of this vital subject, as useful today as its earlier versions were to students of the past.

J. P. Den Hartog: The Reprint Engineer
J. P. Den Hartog (1901–1989), who taught for most of his career at MIT, was one of the founders of the Dover reprint program in engineering. As the author of several books that Dover reprinted and still has in print, and as an advisor from the 1950s until just a few years before his death in 1989, Professor Den Hartog gave invaluable advice concerning books of lasting interest and importance in his field.

Not many books in engineering have a productive shelf life spanning several decades. Among the exceptions are these four books of Professor Den Hartog, which Dover reprinted and occasionally revised in later printings from 1961 through 1987: Mechanics, 1961, Strength of Materials, 1961, Mechanical Vibrations, 1985, and Advanced Strength of Materials, 1987. Still widely read and cited by authors in these areas, Den Hartog's books are a tribute to his gift for exposition and clarity.

The J. P. Den Hartog Award, established in 1987, is presented in recognition of lifetime contributions to the teaching and practice of vibration engineering.

Theory applied to practical problems

I purchased Hartog's book together with Meirovitch's Fundamentals of Vibrations and Kelly's Schaum's Mechanical vibrations. I must say that Hartog and Meirovitch complement each other beautifully whereas Kelly's book feels a little superfluous.

It is clear from the book that Hartog himself had extensive experience with real world vibration analysis. The theory is developed while analyzing a range of mechanical mechanisms and electrical circuits that frequently are important in real vibrating systems. Hartogs book is therefore useful as a reference, for instance for how the piston excite vibrations in the engine frame. Although quite old, the book does not feel dated. The type setting is old school with numerous small but clear figures.

Meirovitch's book is more modern in its presentation. Meirovitch prepares the reader for modern methods of vibration analysis such as frequency response analysis of continuous systems with the aid of the finite element method. Meirovitch also make extensive use of matrix algebra and analytical mechanics. However, Meirovitch lacks in practical examples.

Overall I recomend the book, especially in combination with Meirovitch.

This book was first published in 1934 by McGraw-Hill and remained through 4 editions for 40 years one of McGraw-Hil's all-time best sellers in engineering and physics. It is filled with practical examples and continues to be a major source for down-to-earth explanations of vibrational phenomena. Partly because of the intellectual and practical impact of this book, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers established the ASME J. P. Den Hartog Award that recognizes life-ltime contributions to the teaching and practice of vibration engineering. All active workers who I know in vibration engineering own and frequently consult this book.

Positive Thinking, Written Goals, Tithing.

If you're a veteran reader of self-help books, you'll recognize most of what you read in "Im Rich Beyond...".
The authors mix their personal story with how-to's for attaining all you desire in life.
Their message is, basically, this: use positive thinking (the affirmation "I'm Rich Beyond my Wildest Dreams" sung to a familiar tune, for example), written goals (they advise that you make lots of lists of the things you want --in 79 cent notebooks--) and Tithe.
The tithing part (along with those 79 cent notebooks) seem to be a particularly important part of the process.
Did I mention that the authors have a website where their e-books and other products are sold?
In any case, as I said, you won't find much new here. But the writing isn't too bad, and, as long as you don't buy cartons of notebooks (or spend too much time at their website), you could spend your money on worse books than this one. Thus, the three star rating.
However, for a really great book on manifesting what you want, try "Write It Down, Make It Happen." The author of that one has no website, and sells nothing else that I know of. She just outlines this system of ASKING THE UNIVERSE FOR WHAT YOU WANT in a way that contains less marketing.

A Real Life Manual For Getting What You Want In LIfe

I was really lucky to come across "I'm Rich Beyond My Wildest Dreams". This book clearly explains how you can attract abundance, prosperity, and great health in your life.
I have used the manifesting system described in this book to have dinner with one of the most famous personal development speakers and gurus in the world!!! I have used this system to eliminate some serious business problems, such as a really problematic business client.
I'm using this system to manifest more money and wealth in my life than I ever thought possible.
The key is to actually do the exercises that Thomas Pauley and Penelope Pauley discuss. If you want to live the life of your dreams, you cannot go wrong with this book. Buy this book today and start using it!!!
I also recommend that you get Marc Allen's "The Millionaire Course", "Goals" by Brian Tracy, and "Dynamic Laws of Prosperity" by Catherine Ponder.

A Simple Formula That Works

I've read a ton of self help books. All of them offer some good advice, and they often repeat themselves. This book also contains ideas I've read before - but it takes all the new agey melodrama out of the formula. The author gives specifics about what to do to increase your money flow, and doesn't apologize for wanting to "be rich beyond his wildest dreams." I found that refreshing. He calls money what it is: something to have an awful lot of fun with, and also something God given. I was amused to read his comment that this system would work whether you believed in it or not. Well, he's not kidding! I had a "yeah - whatever!" attitude when I started. But after I tried his suggestions, my income started to increase in surprizing ways. I still refer to it often. I recommend it! And check out his website. It's also helpful.
