I have been teaching Intercultural Communication using this text (previous edition). After completing my MPhil in Intercultural Communication and being exposed to alot of texts in the field, I am still confident that this text is a very good introduction for college students. I have been teaching groups of students that are very diverse, with up to 14 different cultures at one time, and we always have fun with this book, because we are able to discuss the concepts very broadly. I still have to find a better book in its class.

You probably don't need to purchase this book for your class.
    By C. Herwig
I really applaud the author of this book for being so thorough in giving everything discussed an intercultural communication-spin, however, that's what it ends of being: a whole bunch of intro to psych or sociology concepts reinterpreted through the intercultural communication lens.
And this is a completely valid thing to do. however, the reinterpretation is not hard to guess. I would wait to see if, after hearing the chapters discussed in lecture, you are so 'unsure of the foreign concepts' so as to require reinforcement from the book.
Also, it's extremely expensive for a. being a paperback, b. being so small, and c. only containing black and white photographs.

Physics and the Art of Dance: Understanding Movement, by Kenneth Laws

Written by a physicist with professional dance training, Physics and the Art of Dance explains how dancers can achieve better, safer performances through an understanding of physics in motion. Using simple, non-technical terms, Kenneth Laws combines his knowledge of both physics and dance to describe how the laws of gravity, momentum, and energy affect dancing bodies. The book explores the natural laws that govern the subtleties of balance, the techniques of leaps and pirouettes, and the impressive lifts and turns executed by ballet partners. Finally, Laws offers insight into two current discussions in the dance world--the effect of body size on ballet technique, and the relationship between science and the art of dance.

Beautiful, original stop-action photographs by Martha Swope, along with clear diagrams, illustrate the concepts described in the text. Plus, an intriguing "puzzler" at the beginning of each chapter provides an engaging entre into the topics presented. For those who want a more advanced understanding of the physics, extensive appendices are provided.

This new book combines the best features of Laws's widely acclaimed The Physics of Dance and Physics, Dance, and the Pas de Deux by Laws and Cynthia Harvey. Its expert application of the basic principles of physics to the art of dance will be an invaluable resource for dancers and dance instructors and will open a new level of appreciation for lovers of the form. It will also appeal to physicists who seek to include the arts in their scientific pursuits.

Review

"Laws' book is fascinating to read and one of the finest examples of the marriage of science and art in the literature today."--Gigi Berardi, author of Finding Balance

"[L]ucid, friendly, and to the point. Laws obviously knows his ballet as well as his physics...This book will surly have immense value to dancers...[F]ascinating to see physical principles applied in such practical detail to positioning the human body in the beautiful and abstract movement of the ballet."--Physics Today

"[T]his volume provides clear explanations of the physical laws that describe the way nature controls balance, leaps, pirouettes, lifts, and turns; the effect of body size on ballet technique; and the relationship between the science and dance....Excellent photographs and diagrams illustrate the text. Providing a new understanding of the application of physics to ballet that results n better and safer performances, this valuable resource is accessible to students and general readers as well as dance scholars, faculty, and professional dancers."--CHOICE

"Physics and the Art of Dance should be read by all dancers, choreographers and dance teachers. Dance artists and dance scientists will delight in the new information. The puzzlers at the beginning of each chapter motivate the reader to find logical answers. Photographs by Martha Swope are elegant; the tables and glossary are excellent. This book will be required reading for all my students." --Janice Plastino, University of California at Irvine "Ken Laws seems to me to be an important ambassador coming to dance from the world of science. He is our interpreter and all his explanations of the physical laws are informed by, and infused with, his great love of dance and dancers." --Francia Russell, Pacific Northwest Ballet

"Which came first, gravity, human rhythmic movement, Newton's laws of motion, classical ballet, an understanding of the physics of dance, or an appreciation of the aesthetics of ballet? Which one? And does it matter? Ken Laws in this most remarkable book juxtaposes all the concepts above resulting in a clarification, enhancement and appreciation of the beauty of both ballet and physics. Laws make use of first-rates photographs and illustrations to illuminate and inform the reader resulting in a superior enjoyment of both ballet and physics."--Brian Schwartz, Professor of Physics and Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs, The Graduate Center, City University of New York

"Explains your steps in scientific terms...The practical lessons will surely help you out in ballet, and science class, too."--Dance Spirit Magazine

As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need.
By jack wilinsky
The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.

Absolutely incredible!
By Sergey Orshanskiy
This book is INCREDIBLE!

I have several years of different kinds of dance and dance-related background (social dancing - swing, tango, etc.; yoga, pilates, ballet, ...) I also have a strong background in mathematics, physics, computer science (will have a Ph.D. in a few months) and related disciplines.

If you have some college-level physics background, or even a solid understanding of high-school physics, chances are that you can work out many of the things in this book on your own. But it takes time, and you may not have the enthusiasm. (In fact, after reading this book you may get the enthusiasm to actually work out a few things.) On the other hand, if you have this kind of background, then reading this book is simple, very enjoyable, and also a great learning experience. You do not have to understand everything. If you understand one idea from each chapter - that is more than enough to read this book. (For example, if the only things you understand from the chapter on pirouettes is that it makes sense to push into the floor with both legs in opposite directions. Another idea you may get from another chapter is - why your body wants to lean in the direction you are starting to fall to actually save you from falling.)

This is great for learning dance on top of your scientific background. In minutes you pick up things that would take months to discover. You start applying them immediately. Very quickly (if you devote some time to thinking over this book) it creates a framework in your mind. You come to a dance class, and you understand so much more, because many of the things can be easily explained in the framework of this book. In other words, the book gives you a quick foundation to build on top, if you have intellect and years of education, rather than years of dance background (then you already do have a foundation).

Besides, this book gives you a better understanding of physics. Especially if you are more of a dancer than a thinker, then, I would assume (not sure though) you can get a lot of physics out of it. That is, you can use the book the other way round. You know how something feels, and then you can relate to the physical explanation.

I am not, however, sure that this book would be of equal benefit to those who don't know much physics. Generally speaking, I would highly recommend to every dancer to actually learn some physics. Especially if you are in college, take a course in basic Newtonian mechanics. (This can make even more sense for a dancer, than learning anatomy or music.) The author of the book stresses it a lot, many dancers without a science background do many things that are counterproductive. It takes just a little scientific thinking to recognize these mistakes and stop wasting time. Just like it is useful to know how your body works to e.g. strech safely and efficiently, it is also useful to know how nature works to dance better.

If you ask "What does it feel like, when you know more physics, how does it help to dance?" --- I can try to answer. You know how it feels when you notice which way you are falling (out of balance or out of alignment) - forward, sideways, etc., right? You notice, then you fix it. After this book, especially if you have some physics background to relate to, but perhaps even without it, you will start to notice how having your feet further apart makes it easier to rotate (e.g. pirouette from 4th), how lifting your leg in Arabesque Pirouette slows you down (unless you lift it higher than 90 degrees), how sacrificing turnout before a grand jete makes your jump longer and higher; how you get more tired when doing slower jumps then when doing faster jumps, and other kinds of things. The world will become more clear for you, easier to understand; it will make more sense.

If you do some other dance style, you would also definitely benefit from this book. (You would benefit much more if you supplmenent your dancing by taking some ballet classes, at least for a year, and then you can apply this book to your dance style.) If you do acrobatics, martial arts, etc., you can greatly benefit from this book as well, but again, you need to be able to relate to this book. You need to know some ballet (better by personal experience) and/or some physics, at least on a basic level (e.g. 2nd Newton's law, F=ma).

If you are a physicist, note that this book is not technical. It has some appendices (still pretty basic) and plenty of references, some, presumably, to more technical materials. So you can use it as a starting point. (Not sure there is much technical research on the physics of dance or related activities.)

Overall, a great book. Standing ovation!

It does not deal with barriers, hurdles, or conflicts to be resolved; rather, it paints a possible vision of how we can take advantage of our collective learning to move an enterprise forward.

This book provides the reader with a sound, practical framework for instituting innovation strategy beyond the traditional definition of flow of parts or finances. At the core is an understanding of the dual value of knowledge (content) and innovation (process) using 'real-time' learning as the methodology.
Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy introduces new managerial concepts such as:
Value-System versus Value-Chain
Strategic Business Network (SBN) versus Strategic Business Unit (SBU)
Customer Success versus Customer Satisfaction
It is an invaluable resource for both managers and organization leaders.

Innovation - A Definite Leverage Point
By Robert G. Turner
When I first read Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy in 1998, I was amassing a large library of KM books. I had accomplished a similar effort in the mid-80's on the subject of innovation. Because of the relatedness of these two efforts, I grasped rather quickly the importance Debra Amidon was placing on innovation--my ken was clear. I believed she was and is, more than figuratively speaking, on the money.

From the beginnings of the focus on KM, there has consistently been the challenging people/technology dichotomy. Amidon's perspective on innovation provides an extremely insightful focus on a third dimension in the core KM picture--process. Debra Amidon obviously had enough grounding in both the people and technology domains of knowledge activities that she intuitively values the innovation issue.

The American culture and economy has always been fueled by high capacity for innovation. While we have kept the pace, other nations are increasing their innovation quotient. Now, in a new knowledge era, Debra Amidon is offering advanced ways to leverage innovation. Much of what she presents seems familiar, nevertheless, the way she weaves it all together and the new elements she presents takes innovation to a new level in the enterprise. For me, this book becomes more valuable each year, particularly as we find that the nature of innovation in our enterprises becomes more complex with higher stakes than ever.

A book full of insights with a practical framework.
By D. J. Skyrme
You don't usually expect to pick up a management book with a photograph of Claude Monet's lily pond. The reason is that Amidon describes Monet as "daring to be different". Furthermore, in order to see the big picture you have to stand back. This book helps you step back to see the unfolding panaroma of the knowledge economy and knowledge management.
In a field where there is no shortage of books, few can match the insights and perspectives of this one. It traces the 'momentum of knowledge management' and gives a practical framework for knowledge innovation, the next wave. There are thought provoking concepts and practical questions to assess your organization's capability for knowledge innovation. For me, what sets this book apart from the many others is its high level of insight and original thinking, all expressed in a lucid style that is packed into an ideal format for those occasions when you want inspiration coupled with practical suggestions. So, if you are thinking about your organization's or your nation's future in the knowledge economy, then this is the book to read. It really is the Ken.

A must read for in todays global business environment
By amasland@walldata.com
Debra has devoted considerable time and energy to develop a practical but compelling approach to knowledge innovation. She provides a sound background on management theory but quickly extends her insights into useful strategies for assessing the current status of knowledge innovation within an organization. Senior managers can easily use Debra's work to improve the state of knowledge innovation within their enterprise and their industry.
Debra also provides valuable insights into the place of alliances and partnerships in today's global economy. Any company that wants to remain competitive can gain useful advise from reviewing the benefits of building a strong business alliance program that shares knowledge among its partner network.

The Hating Game: A Novel, by Sally Thorne

Debut author Sally Thorne bursts on the scene with a hilarious and sexy workplace comedy all about that thin, fine line between hate and love.

Nemesis (n.) 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome.

  2) A person’s undoing

  3) Joshua Templeman

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

Hands down one of my new absolute favourites!
By Kristine: Glass Paper Ink Bookblog
PLATINUM

I recently attended a Writers Retreat where one book in particular was mentioned, and I use the term mentioned very loosely, what actually happened was they demanded we all read it immediately. Suffice to say, I purchased the ebook that night and dove in, immediately I was smitten, utterly invested and truly in love with every single word written by Sally Thorne.

"Watching you pretend to hate that nickname is the best part of my day."

Lucy Hutton always dreamt of working in the publishing industry, as an avid reader her love for all things books was greater than anything she'd ever known, being hired by Gamin Publishing was everything she had ever imagined, but when her beloved company was on the brink of collapse and amalgamation with another struggling publishing house, Bexley Books, became her reality, her career goals stayed alive, just barely, with a host of personnel cuts and the loss of her best friend Val, her work world was rocked. The day she met Joshua Templeman seemed like a possible new beginning, but his cool disregard of her almost immediately sent shockwaves through her usually cherry demeanor, a war began that day and with every day that past their mutual dislike of each other grew.

"You've broken me down so completely, I can't even handle it when a guy tells me I'm beautiful."

The Hating Game written in the first person point of view painted Lucy as both incredibly smart, and extremely funny, every snarky thought, every snappy comeback, every moment of despair mixed with joy as Joshua became Josh in front of her eyes. Every moment in this book served to cement my love of the author's words, I was invested immediately, but each new chapter brought with it feelings of awe, the more I read the deeper in love I fell, the more real Lucy and Joshua felt, the more their personalities jumped off the page and straight into my heart.

"I'm about to lose something I never had to begin with."

The Hating Game is slow burn in the very best way, Thorne builds not only the connection between her hero and heroine but the readers attachment to them, their witty dialogue served to lure the reader into losing themselves in one of the best bouts of drawn out verbal foreplay that I have ever experienced. Usually when I enjoy a book it only serves to make me want to devour the words, here however I simultaneously wanted to speed read my way to end, and slow down in order to savor every moment. I loved every second here, I wanted to drown in Thorne's words, I wanted to escape into Lucy and Joshua's world, stand in the corner, watching them like a creeper, I wanted to befriend them, I wanted to relax with Lucy over a glass of wine after a long day at work, I wanted to know everything that happened in between every moment, every lost look, every sigh, every secret smile. The Hating Game has quickly became one of my very favourite books, climbing it's way onto not only my Best of 2016 List but my favourite of all time list. If this is how Sally Thorne marks her debut into bookworld, I can only imagine what she has yet to do.

Amazing enemies to lovers ~ effortless read and hilarious
By DonnaC
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
5 stars!!!

“My hostage. My blackmailed, unwilling captive. Stockholm Shortcake.”

There is nothing like a good hate/love book to get your reading mojo well and truly pumping and that is exactly what The Hating Game delivered. Sally Thorne captured everything about those office relationships where competition takes on a whole new meaning and to think that this is her debut novel, I was totally blown away.

Enemies to lovers is one of those tropes that literally has me salivating. You learn more about a person through their actions in that kind of environment, especially in the work place. It is harder to hate than it is to love and there is often a very fine line between the two. Sometimes there is that genuine hate, because let’s be honest, there are a lot of douches and b****es in the world, but more often than not we hate as a veil of our true feelings and that was definitely the case with these two.

“Shortcake, if we were flirting, you’d know about it.”
“Because I’d be traumatized?”
“Because you’d be thinking about it later on, lying in bed.”

Two publishing houses struggling in the economic climate merge to ensure the viability of at least one of them, two CEO’s, two assistants. One male assistant, one female assistant who knock their a**es out week after week to be the best. This was all about one-upmanship. Who could work the longest hours, who was more efficient, who has the best ideas etc.: Their competitiveness was the source of many hilarious scenes, yet so relatable having been in a similar environment myself. But they loved to hate one and other, their inter-office games of “hate” had me laughing so many times and this book was written so well their story effortlessly flowed from page to page. This was an easy read, a real page turner.

“The trick is to find someone who’s strong enough to take it. That one person who can give it back as good as they get.”

Lucy Hutton was working in a place that she had dreamt of since she was a teenager. For her, publishing had always been her dreams albeit maybe not as a PA to the CEO. Her position had left her friendless because of everyone’s “snitch” mentality and her only source of enjoyment in her working day were her battles with Joshua. These two sat in the same office where daggers were drawn from clock in to clock out. Where juvenile staring competitions were the norm and trying to decipher codes and logins were their speciality.

“I feel like your Easter egg.”

Joshua was a whizz with numbers, he kept himself to himself and was definitely a closed book. He was an ornery man of rituals and order and was as predictable as they came. But who was Joshua Templeman? With a new position being made as COO, a promotion for Lucy or Joshua, battle lines are well and truly drawn as both know that neither one could work for the other. This was a fight to the death in more ways than one. Lucy begins to see a different side to Joshua when little chinks in his armour are slowly revealed, could this be who Joshua Templeman really is and god forbid Lucy for actually…falling in love.

“The energy that usually lashes ineffectively inside each of us now has a conduit, forming a loop of electricity between us, cycling through me, into him. My heart is glowing in my chest like a bulb, flashing brighter with each movement of his lips.”

The humour and banter in this book was contagious from start to finish, the dialogue was spot on and the chemistry was seriously off the charts. Even in hate mode you could feel those flickers of electricity and you were constantly on edge just waiting for them to ignite into a raging inferno. These two as enemies were hilarious, as lovers totally swoon worthy. I adored EVERYTHING about this book. I made the mistake of starting this late in the day and then read into the early hours of the morning, I couldn’t put it down. The characters were infectious, the plot was riveting and as each layer of Joshua Templeman was revealed my heart just got mushier and mushier. For those that love enemies to lovers this is a must read and the story will speak for itself.

“This is the best game I’ve ever played in my entire life.”

Wish I could give it 10 stars. Perfect story!
By Lalo
I cannot believe that this is the first book by this author. It was so well done. My daughter read it and insisted I read it. She laughed out loud so often while she was reading it, I was prepared for a romantic comedy. While the book is funny, it also dealt with some serious subjects. I am so pleased with this book. It was fun to read. There were a few times I decided not to read it, like sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's office, it was just so funny, I was afraid I would laugh and not be able to stop and embarrass myself, so I read it when I was at home and free to laugh to my heart's content. Having worked in the corporate world for 30 plus years, I really enjoyed the interactions between co-workers and especially HR. The book was delightful and the ending was great. I love Joshua Templeman and Shortcake was perfect for him. Glad to see these two get together.

It is a perfect book.

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on essays written over the last 30 years, Harvey brings one of the most fascinating and confounding periods of French-or for that matter, European-history into sharp relief. He asserts that two conceptions of modernity were nurtured in Paris in the years after the First Empire-one bourgeois, and the other founded on the idea of the "social republic" geared toward benefiting all classes of citizens. Harvey traces these conflicting movements over the decades leading up to the Revolution of 1848 and charts their reverberations through the final days of the Paris Commune. The book is richly illustrated with over a hundred period photographs and cartoons by Daumier and others, which serve to reinforce the notion of Paris as a city of contrasts in a period of profound change. And Harvey is as comfortable and adept at quoting pertinent passages from the romantic novelists as he is offering detailed economic analyses of real estate and labor market dynamics. By making use of primary sources from diverse disciplines, he offers a thorough examination of the period: he explores, for instance, the role of women and class strictures and the consequences of urban planning and public transportation. The worst that can be said of this exhaustive investigation into the complicated and turbulent era of the Second Empire is that Harvey presupposes an intermediate knowledge of many of the important actors and events. As he weaves the humanities, philosophy, economics and sociology into a detailed tapestry, the author leaves remedial explanations of Parisian and French social movements to the authors listed in a well-annotated bibliography. This is not a problem in and of itself, but readers expecting a breezy history of the "City of Lights" may find themselves overwhelmed by the complexity and depth of this book.

Review
"'Harvey's work is notable for the sheer diversity of sources he draws on... A stunning book that will engage anyone with an interest in 19th century politics and urbanism... a definitive work on the historical geography of Paris which shows tremendous insight, forceful arguments, and above all, an obvious passion.' - Environment and Planning C: Government and Policy 'Harvey brings one of the most fascinating and confounding periods of French - or for that, European - history into sharp relief.' Publishers Weekly 'Much more than a simple narrative... [a] complex and sophisticated work.' - Library Journal 'David Harvey is perhaps the most important urban scholar writing in the English language, and here he is at his best.' - Thomas Bender, author of The Unfinished City: New York and the Metropolitan idea"

A cultural and geographical history of Second Empire Paris
By M. A. Krul
David Harvey, the famous social geographer, is not particularly known for his work on cultural matters, having spent most of his career working on issues of political economy, spatial organization and (some) philosophy of the same. Nonetheless, "Paris, Capital of Modernity" is a partially cultural, partially political-geographical history of the modernization of Paris undertaken under the famous leadership of Georges Haussmann (1809-1891), who created the monument, park and boulevard systems for which Paris is now justly renowned. As context, Harvey analyzes the works and attitudes of famous writers of that period in Paris, such as Flaubert and De Balzac, in addition to providing many nice photographs and maps charting the changes and developments in France's capital.

As one can expect with Harvey, most of the work is spent on tracing the geographical and spatial aspects of the modernization and industrialization of Paris and its political background in the persons of Napoleon III, Emperor of France between 1852 and 1870, and Georges Haussmann. He shows the constellation of class forces that allowed Napoleon III to play various classes against each other, shifting support from financial capital to landlord powers and back, and the position Haussmann's developments had in this political ensemble. Although the initial material is a little dry, things get better as Harvey digs into the meat of the matter, where Haussmann does not appear as much as the hated enemy of the workers and wrecker of ancient Paris as he is often depicted, but rather as an embodiment of the 'creative destruction' that capitalism is when it fully comes into its own, as it did in France around this time. The tensions and furies caused by the combination of capitalist industrialization on the one hand, and the spatial and economic restructuring of Paris as such by Haussmann and speculators both would finally erupt into the Paris Commune of 1871, which inaugurated the permanent end of the power of both reaction and a bloody repression of socialism in France.

The book is written with the usual subtlety, political understanding, and nuance of Harvey's best work. Whether the literary additions to the work are an improvement or a distraction perhaps depends on taste, all the more since the first chapter, entirely on De Balzac's oeuvre, is rather at variance with the topic of the rest of the work. But although the topic of Paris' furious ascent into modernity is not quite a new topic (addressed famously by Walter Benjamin, for example), Harvey's book is a worthy addition to Marx' own studies on the history of France: "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Napoleon Bonaparte" (The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte) and "The Civil War in France" (The Civil War in France: The Paris Commune).

Paris as archetype
By Bo K.
Implicitly taking his start from Benjamin's sketches of Paris as the "capitol" of the 19th century, Harvey analyses the elements that transformed Paris from medieval labrynth to modern bourgeois metropolis and the corresponding effect that this had on all levels of the class structure, men and women, and the spatial geography of the city itself. He starts with Balzac and Baudelaire, as all such studies must; but quickly moves out of literature and into history, looking at the changes in the city geography begun by Hausmann. Harvey uses his familiar metaphor of changes in geography as a symbol of the changes wrought by modernity. Excellent, pointed read for those interested in Paris and French history, urban development, and the effects of capital on capitols. Great bibliography too!

The Historic Capitalist Template for Urban Renewal
By Paul F Tioxon
David Harvey as a renowned scholar only adds to his contributions to understanding not only Paris and Modernity, but Urban Renewal as a creative phase of Capitalism, as it seeks out new spaces within preexisting cities to invest surplus capital, employ labor and grow the future capacity for capital flowing in and out of globally connected regions.

It is not only an intellectual grasp demonstrated here, but a grasp using multiple points of reference. The book is carefully designed to display political cartoons, illustrations, early photos and fine artwork to show the story he is trying to tell. Additionally, you will find an enlightening use of literature, novels, poetry, as well references from scholarly histories, and contemporary writings to tell the story of the remaking of Old Paris into the City Of Light, the grandest spectacle of urban beauty. A more recent example of this story would be Edmund Bacon's herculean reinvention of Philadelphia or Robert Moses reshaping NYC to ready it for the post industrial American Century. Baron Haussmann was the planner and driving force behind the renewal and expansion of Paris into a great global urban center, who carried out his renewal during what is referred to as the 2nd Empire period of France. He secured the political patronage of Napoleon III. For nearly 2 decades from 1853-1870 and continuing on well until after he was dismissed from his power, Paris became a construction site. Demolition of the old Medieval narrow streets and alleys and construction of new boulevards and grand monuments and public spaces became the hallmark of modern cities around the world.
