Maurice Hall conoce a Clive Durham en una Cambridge totalmente masculina y mis�gina a principios del siglo XX, lo que comenz� entre ellos siendo una amistad sincera, llena de camarader�a y complicidad fraternal deriv� en un amor profundo, ingenuo y sincero que dur� hasta que Clive que era un ac�rrimo detractor de todo convencionalismo victoriano de la �poca decide "curarse", romper con el pasado y convertirse en un hombre "honorable" respetuoso del tradicionalismo se�orial familiar dejando a Maurice solo, triste, perdido y confundido con la ruptura. Tras un tiempo de vacio y soledad, Maurice conoce a Alec Scudder, un sirviente de la mansi�n de los Durham y con el nace una esperanza, esta vez todo ser� diferente, Maurice decide arriesgarse y romper con todo para ser feliz.
Novela adelantada a su �poca, escrita entre 1913-1914, en plena �poca Eduardina el autor aborda el tema de una relaci�n homosexual entre hombres de distintas clases sociales en medio de una sociedad r�gidamente estratificada donde el sexo era tema tab� y el amor entre personas del mismo sexo era un delito de "degenerados sodomitas" penado por la ley. Con una buena narrativa y unos excelentes di�logos entramos en la vida y destino de estos hombres que tuvieron que vivir en medio de una sociedad llena de hipocres�a y doble moral como proscritos disfrazados para no ser condenados al ostracismo social mas absoluto.
