Chua (Day of Empire) imparts the secret behind the stereotypical Asian child's phenomenal success: the Chinese mother. Chua promotes what has traditionally worked very well in raising children: strict, Old World, uncompromising values--and the parents don't have to be Chinese. What they are, however, are different from what she sees as indulgent and permissive Western parents: stressing academic performance above all, never accepting a mediocre grade, insisting on drilling and practice, and instilling respect for authority. Chua and her Jewish husband (both are professors at Yale Law) raised two girls, and her account of their formative years achieving amazing success in school and music performance proves both a model and a cautionary tale. Sophia, the eldest, was dutiful and diligent, leapfrogging over her peers in academics and as a Suzuki piano student; Lulu was also gifted, but defiant, who excelled at the violin but eventually balked at her mother's pushing. Chua's efforts "not to raise a soft, entitled child" will strike American readers as a little scary--removing her children from school for extra practice, public shaming and insults, equating Western parenting with failure--but the results, she claims somewhat glibly in this frank, unapologetic report card, "were hard to quarrel with." Most critics agreed that Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is an entertaining read—lively and humorous, written with the intent to shock. More controversial is Chua’s stereotyping of Chinese and Western cultures, not to mention her authoritarian parenting methods. Critics judged the book largely by asking the following questions: Should self-esteem come before accomplishment, or accomplishment before self-esteem? If the latter, should it be achieved by threats and constant monitoring? Chua’s teenage daughters are undeniably accomplished, but at what emotional cost? While some reviewers found that Chua’s technique borders on abuse and her writing was, at best, self-serving, others were impressed by her parenting results and opined that the West could learn a few things from this remarkably driven Chinese American mother.

Chua’s stated intent is to present the differences between Western and Chinese parenting styles by sharing experiences with her own children (now teenagers). As the daughter of Chinese immigrants, she is poised to contrast the two disparate styles, even as she points out that being a “Chinese Mother” can cross ethnic lines: it is more a state of mind than a genetic trait. Yet this is a deeply personal story about her two daughters and how their lives are shaped by such demands as Chua’s relentless insistence on straight A’s and daily hours of mandatory music practice, even while vacationing with grandparents. Readers may be stunned by Chua’s explanations of her hard-line style, and her meant-to-be humorous depictions of screaming matches intended to force greatness from her girls. She insists that Western children are no happier than Chinese ones, and that her daughters are the envy of neighbors and friends, because of their poise and musical, athletic, and academic accomplishments. Learned a lot from her book

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.
I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

Chinese Culture

This book is an excellent insight into the significantly different cultures and society between China and US. If anything, it allows for a greater appreciation for the freedoms we share in America. The right to be strict or loose; to forge our own path in life. The book suggest why in China, many lack the critical thought, innovation, resiliency to adapt and overcome adversities. Too much pressure is placed on Chinese children that by the time they achieve high school they are burnt out. The consequence in China for not achieving is a future working in manufacturing 12 hrs a day/ 7 days a week; surviving. This book ultimately explains why the trend for wealthy Chinese to send their children abroad to learn rather than the extremely competitive nature in Chinese Education. To give their children a wider range of opportunities. A child can be mediocre in China or excel in America.

One Mother's Honest Experience

I really liked this book. The story is well-written and the topic was riveting. I think it's rare to read a memoir that is so brutally honest and sincere. Ms. Chua knows how to build a story. She doesn't try to sugar coat anything and she bares her soul, showing her successes as well as her failures. Plus, her daughters helped her edit the book, so the perspective isn't one-sided. Sometimes I laughed out loud and felt bad for Ms. Chua. Other times I wondered if she was crazy.
For anyone who thinks this is a guide to Chinese parenting: please stop. It isn't. This is one mother's story. There are some cultural similarities amongst mothers of a given culture, sure; but it is ridiculous to think that all mothers of any ONE culture parent the same exact way. I did see some commonalities between her parenting and the way my parents (both Chinese) raised me. However, despite the fact that my mom did assign me extra homework and sign me up for piano lessons, she also allowed me to go to sleepovers, let me sing/act in plays, and never (I mean never) criticized me. She was strict, but never mean.
If you are interested in one Chinese mother's experience raising children, you will have front row seats through this highly entertaining book. It's easy to criticize other parents when you're sitting in a comfortable arm chair, but what parent is perfect? Whether you agree with Ms. Chua or not, you have to admit the lady is brave to bare her self-admitted flawed parenting techniques to a world that loves to judge and criticize others (especially parents). I respect Ms. Chua for doing that.
