The Way Things Are, by Lama Ole Nydahl

Years of travel and search for adventure matured in 1968 when Hannah and Ole Nydahl met the great Tibetan lamas in Nepal. Having fled south into India during the Communist Chinese occupation of their country and facing the loss of their timeless wisdom, these masters of meditation readily imparted to the eager Danes the view of the Great Seal Mahamudra and the methods of Diamond Way Buddhism. Trained in the Himalayas until the autumn of 1972, the Nydahls were first directed by the great Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche and then adopted by Tibet's first incarnate lama, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, who asked them to work in the West. Since then they have traveled around the world twice a year, with Lama Ole teaching nearly every night. They have written half a dozen books, translated into over twenty languages. To date they have founded, with the help of their countless students and friends, over 630 meditation centers for the lay Diamond Way Buddhist Karma Kagyu lineage. Until her death in 2007, Hannah also organized study courses of traditional learning and Tibetan translations under the spiritual guidance of the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje and Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche.

"Lama Ole Nydahl is one of the closest disciples of my predecessor and a qualified teacher who transmits the flawless teachings of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Through his activity over the last three decades, he has benefited many by presenting the profound methods of the Buddha, and the Diamond Way is one of the many methods relevant to people in the West."

About the Author
Lama Ole Nydahl and his wife Hannah studied Buddhism under H.H., the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, and at their teacher's wishes, traversed the globe spreading Buddhism to the West. For more than three decades, until her untimely death from cancer in 2007, the Nydahls introduced thousands of students to meditation and a new way of seeing the world. Nydahl continues to travel and teach in over 600 Diamond Way Buddhist centers around the world.

Excellent guide to Buddhism
By Willy Richardson
Some of Lama Ole's books in the past have been written specifically for his students. He always looked for publishers that would print his words exactly as he wrote them, despite his Danish dry humor, subtleties and attempts to pack each sentence with three topics and layers of meaning. For this reason his books were not really meant for everyone.

This book he took a different approach. It was actually written in German, and translated by an American Phd in Philosphy. This way of writing resulted in very clean and precisely articulated words and meaning.

I would say this book is truly for public consumption and could become a best-seller in and out of the Buddhist world. I am very happy it was finally written and can feel good about passing it on to anyone interested in Buddhism as a first introduction as well as to those with many years experience with meditation.

Inspiring, amusing, practical guide from here to the top!
By Renzo Balducci
"The goal of all Buddha's teachings is to experience mind's timeless and naked awareness. These methods encompass three areas useful for life: activity, motivation and view." This quote from p. 78 seems to summarize the guiding principles of all buddhist schools. Two and a half millennia of buddhist traditions have left us with a dizzying richness of teachings and explanations. The seekers are potentially confused by the information overload available today. So the direct and practical instructions of great masters are sometimes perceived as exotic and obscure objects of analysis rather than tools to be used in our everyday life.

This little big book by Lama Ole Nydahl is a refreshing exception in todays' "spiritual" marketplace. With a wittily contemporary language, in 180 pages the reader is guided from the inspiring lifestory of the historical Buddha, through insightful and readable explanations of the main traditions he inspired, all the way to deep instructions for practice in the Karma Kagyu lineage, an actual complete Guru Yoga meditation text, and an informative glossary of frequent buddhist terms. Much more than a summary of numerous extensive teachings, this book provides a distilled essence of the Great Seal (Mahamudra) transmissions that the author received directly from his main teacher, the XVIth Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, and other highly respected meditation masters such as Kalu Rinpoche and Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche. It is an eminently practical guide to timeless instructions for realizing our highest human potential: the freedom, joy, and compassionate lifestyle of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas pervading all time and space. Yet it is addressed to the contemporary western society and culture in a fresh literary style that inspires, amuses, and leads by example.

I would highly recommend this book to all people seeking a clear and direct introduction to genuine Vajrayana practice in a style fully compatible with modern life. The way of the lay accomplishers, in the tradition of the great Kagyu forefather Marpa, is now open for all of us. This book represents truly a cultural bridge bringing timeless teachings from the high peaks of the Himalayas to the frenetic jungles of our western cities. The original message is still the same: "the Buddha doesn't need followers, but he always welcomes colleagues".

clear and to the point, a must read!
By Xavier
Ole Nydahl succeeds in getting the essence of the dharma in a clear and structured way and thereby giving practical tips. The absence of cultural vagueness from Tibet makes this book modern, approachable and applicable for me. A must read for people who want to know what Buddhism is all about and what not. Enyoy!
