NATALIE BOERO is an associate professor of sociology at San Jose State University. She is the author of “Bypassing Blame: Bariatric Surgery and the Case of Biomedical Failure” in Biomedicalization: Technoscience, Health, and Illness in U.S. Biomedicine and “Fat Kids, Working Moms, and the ‘Epidemic of Obesity’: Race, Class, and Mother-Blame,” in The Fat Studies Reader.

Accessible and not too academic

This is a great book... and I am so glad I read it! The author really makes a case for a new perspective on weight and health and the research- especially in the second half of the book- is fascinating. I initially thought this book might be too academic but I found it to accessible and relatively free of jargon. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new take on a subject that never seems to go away.

Accessible, Fascinating, and Urgently Needed

This book provides an urgently needed take on what's come to be accepted as the obesity "epidemic." Boero's incisive analysis is matched by her compassion for the people caught in the crossfire of the "war" on obesity. I learned a great deal reading this book, and won't read a news article about the "epidemic" in the same way again.

A dissertation on weight/culture/meaning

I found this book to be helpful in delineating America's current decline into obesity. It's absolutely cultural and probably the biggest threat we have today in terms of resources and long term consequences to society.
I have many European friends and we recently talked about the disparity in weight between our countries-the cultural biases and mores that lead to our "weight difference". It's funny, my husband is pretty for but his sister, who stole a ton of money from him and her family are quite large-obese even. My friend said that such a thing-stealing from ones family is absolutely very American-as Americans think on a very non collective basis. We don't think in terms of a collective or group-the burden his sister will put on society with her ever increasing problems as she goes on and her kid's as well is no concern to her as she can steal and lie to herself-very "Ugly American" indeed!
In this book the author explores facets of our culture, our media bias (which tends to favor the thin segment) and our deep denial process that we as a culture need to look at. We are a greedy bunch, just like my sister in law and her crew, ravenously and unthinkingly wanting more with no regard to how they hurt others or ultimately, themselves!
