The field of astrometry, the precise measurement of the positions, distances and motions of astronomical objects, has been revolutionized in recent years. As we enter the high-precision era, it will play an increasingly important role in all areas of astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. This edited text starts by looking at the opportunities and challenges facing astrometry in the twenty-first century, from space and ground. The new formalisms of relativity required to take advantage of micro-arcsecond astrometry are then discussed, before the reader is guided through the basic methods required to transform our observations from detected photons to the celestial sphere. The final section of the text shows how a variety of astronomical problems can be solved using astrometric methods. Bringing together work from a broad range of experts in the field, this is the most complete textbook on observational astrometry and is ideal for graduate students and researchers alike.

Review
'... there are some very good chapters included, giving detailed overviews of relativistic effects, interferometry, diffraction-limited imaging, CCD image detectors, etc., which all have their relevance in the subject, and make the book a useful reference or starting point for more detailed reading.' Excellent new graduate textbook in astronomy.
By ehorch
As a professional astronomer, I found this book to be an outstanding contribution in updating the field of astrometry and demonstrating its relevance in modern astronomical observations. The chapter authors are all experts in the field who are doing groundbreaking astronomical research with these precision measurement techniques, and the book is edited by one of the premier astrometrists of his generation, William van Altena. The text is substantial yet readable, with many helpful figures and references. The book is an excellent choice for a graduate-level introduction to modern astrometry.

Short review of Astrometry for Astrophysics
By Ludwig Combrinck
This book is an excellent introduction to astrometry, with chapter contributions by experts in this field. I bought the e-book version and read it on my Kindle Fire. This makes it easy to read anywhere... stuck at the airport etc. Although at an introductory level, it contains enough detail to be practical; extensive literature references allow easy further reading if more details are required. This book is suitable for anyone interested in the measurement of stellar positions, the celestial reference frames (optical and radio), astronomical applications using CCD cameras, star catalogues, astrometric satellites, relativistic considerations for astrometry and celestial mechanics. I can recommend this book without any reservations.
