What a Book and with a DVD!

Wasn't what I expected. It was virtually a repeat of a combination of other books I have. It is full of pictures to represent the reading and ideas. There are Hints on fabric, preshrinking, cutting, interfacing tips, zippers, collars, sleeves, technique tips, hems, miter Magic, pressing, welt pockets, travel, wardrobe tips, and fringe secrets. A DVD comes with it, but I honestly haven't seen it yet. Probably a good buy for someone new to sewing or as a refresher for a more seasoned sewer.

Do not waste your money on this book. There are a few helpful hints but they could have easily been included in Power Sewing Toolbox 1. I thought it strange to have a packing section in a sewing book. If I needed advice on packing there is plenty of advice available in travel books and on line.

Good Investment Primer or Stand-Alone Guide

Written in plain language, Evans covers the basics of a broad array of investments and how those investments can be used to meet your financial goals. He explains the relationship of risk and returns (reward) and how to use diversification of your investment mix (portfolio) to manage that risk while improving total returns. There is also an emphasis on using investment vehicles that minimize costs. A plan is presented that is practical, straight forward, and low maintenance. Although it is not an "auto pilot" program, it goes far in taking emotion out of your investment decisions. This book will not make you an expert on all aspects of investing, nor even the specific investment vehicles suggested, but the reader will understand the basics and rationale of any investment being recommended for the reader's portfolio. What the author offers is to show regular people who have little to no investment experience how to make and manage their own investments outside of paid financial management. He delivers. You can use this book as the first step in your financial education, but I am comfortable saying that you could do well using this book as your only guide to building a solid investment portfolio.

This was a gift to my friend...

I had an opportunity to travel to Australia a few years ago, and loved so much the charming and unique "Aussisms" I heard.while there. When it was a good friend's turn to visit, I bought this book for her. She told me how much she loved it, and how many of the expressions she used while she was there - to the delight of her new Aussie friends.

Even if you're not going Down Under. It's a fun to learn the adorable and quirky expressions.

Paradoxically, that is what makes it a force of liberation wherever it breaks through the trance of humdrum existence. Like the act of dreaming, artistic creation is fundamentally mysterious. It is a gift from beyond the field of the human, and it connects us with realities that, though normally unseen, are crucial components of a living world.

While holding this to be true of authentic art, the author acknowledges the presence—overwhelming in our media-saturated age—of a false art that seeks not to liberate but to manipulate and control. Against this anti-artistic aesthetic force, which finds some of its most virulent manifestations in modern advertising, propaganda, and pornography, true art represents an effective line of defense. Martel argues that preserving artistic expression in the face of our contemporary hyper-aestheticism is essential to our own survival.

Art is more than mere ornament or entertainment; it is a way, one leading to what is most profound in us. Reclaiming Art in the Age of Artifice places art alongside languages and the biosphere as a thing endangered by the onslaught of predatory capitalism, spectacle culture, and myopic technological progress. The book is essential reading for visual artists, musicians, writers, actors, dancers, filmmakers, and poets. About the Author
J.F. MARTEL is a writer and award-winning filmmaker working in the Canadian film and television industry. In addition to making several short films, he has researched, written and/or directed a number of documentary programs on topics related to culture and the arts for major Francophone broadcasters, including La Port�e des mots (season two), a twelve-part documentary series exploring the transformative power of song with some of French Canada’s great songwriters.

Martel is a contributor to the web magazine Reality Sandwich. His essay on Stanley Kubrick was included in the first Reality Sandwich anthology, Toward 2012: Perspectives on the Next Age (Tarcher-Penguin), edited by Daniel Pinchbeck and Ken Jordan. Rhizomatic Reclamation of Art

JF Martel has written an extraordinary work of cultural criticism that seeks to define art as opposed to the sustained and commodified assault on the senses that he describes as artifice. Moving fluently between film, philosophy, poetry and art he describes the fundamentally liberatory function of the artistic impulse. Echoing Blake (in the Marriage of Heaven and Hell), he writes with the express purpose of "raising other men (sic) into a perception of the infinite." The writing is remarkably accessible, yet without sacrificing depth. As such, the book ultimately draws the reader into contemplating the mystery of life as Art, and art as Life. There are profound leaps of imagination and visions of immanence explored in this book that will astonish and inspire. It is a rare acheivement and a timely call to action. It is not only highly recommended; it is necessary.

I would highly recommend this work to all artists

As a professional artist and lecturer I regard this work by JF Martel as one of the most insightful and inspiring treatises on art in our time I have ever read.
Using a host of references from painting to literature to music and film Martel reminds us of the often forgotten purpose of art which is to hold us in a state of wonder and to be presented with a mystery. One we are not compelled to explain but only experience.
His comprehensive understanding of the psychology of creativity and how it is applied to his analyses of artists, their work and their time is unique amongst many art commentators that I have read.
I would highly recommend this work to all artists, educators and anybody who wishes to look at art with new eyes and gain valuable insights into the creative process. It is a book that provides a clear understanding of the condition of contemporary art and why it is a global cultural phenomenon that is becoming increasingly bewildering and devoid of meaning.
