The author uses a simple file encryption program to illustrate basic Win32 calls for better file input/output (I/O), including reading and writing files.

Bock also offers tips for extending user interfaces, including how to customize the TreeView control. Next come GDI graphics calls, including customizing a form's background and using bitmaps for menu items. Tips on setting hooks for your windows and using callback functions round out the tour. Visual Basic programmers who have some experience programming with Visual Basic, who now want to exploit the resources of the Windows environment.

Since the book's primary focus is on the Win32 API, the reader should be able to use either VB4 32-bit or VB5, except for the sections on callbacks (only VB5 can be used in these areas). Also, the calls will be limited to 32 bit calls - no 16 bit calls will be addressed.

The author will handle any knowledge of building components to encapsulate API functionality - it will not be a requirement of the reader to understand COM at any level. All component examples will be specified in full for the reader to keep the emphasis on the API calls.

About the Author
Jason Bock has received both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University. He has worked primarily in VB since vesion 3.0 writing client/server applications for a variety of business applications, ranging from application tracking systems to payroll processing to custom query analysis tools. These systems used and/or integrated with a multitude of different technologies and software packages, such as SQL Server, COM, Sybase, Oracle, PeopleSoft, and MS Office. Currently, Jason is a Consultant for Keane, Inc., where he is able to pursue his professional and personal interest in pushing VB as far as it can go.

When he's not starting at a computer monitor, Jason enjoys golfing, playing tennis, biking, spending a lot of time with his wife, and playing with his cat Simon.

Not as useful as I though it would be

I bought this book about a year ago when I had a need to learn how to use Win32 API. I read a little, then started to skim, then skip sections, then put it aside completely where it collected dust while I found my answers elsewhere. I eventually picked it up again after I had become casually familiar with the Win32 API and realized that my remorse over the purchase wasn't the book's fault - rather it was my expectations of what the book was going to deliver.
The Win32 API is vast and complicated. A casual glance at Win32 API books that go over just the Functions and Types (in only 4000 pages) will prove it. Any programmer looking at this book to solve a specific problem for them should keep looking. The book does not cover that many specific API situations, but rather explains syntax and structure, how's and when's, etc (metaphorically explaining what the abbreviations for a cup or tablespoon is and how to read a recipe card rather than how to cook any particular dish itself). I recommend the book as either your first introduction to the Win32 API after you have got VB6 down but before you actually need the Win32 API, or as a refresher for those who know the general gist of how to use the Win32 API, but want to fill in the gaps of what some things are, why they are used, and when to use them.

Excellent Book for API Beginners!

Personally I thought this book was great for progammers just starting out with the API or Applications Programmers Interface. The examples are well laid out and the code is mostly bug free. Yes this book does not have the depth of some other earlier mentioned books, however it is important to realize that this is a tutorial. Because this book claims to be a tutorial it should be rated on how well it teaches the subject. Personally I think the author did a great job and I learned a significant amount from this book.

I love this book!!!

I have purchased this book several times to hand out as a gift. The story is short and sweet but has left a permanent reminder that everything can change based on your perspective. Recently I bought several copies at once just to hand out as a way to get other people to read the book that changed my life! It will only take a few hours if you read slow or you can read it in a short sitting if you are a fast reader! I recommend more people to be exposed to this book and it can change the way you see things. It is not religious and ultimately it points out that the lesson may be that what you see is not always what you get. What matters is.... How will you handle it? My favorite quote from the book is "Every problem brings a gift."

Good entertaining book and good primer for many concepts and ...

Richard Bach writes novels infused with knowledge from different schools of thought as intrinsic part of the story. He does not try to convince you or cram his believes down your throat. He places the knowledge out there and allows you to select and use it if you so desire or totally treat it as entertaining. Self awareness is important for him and appears many times on this book. Good entertaining book and good primer for many concepts and philosophies out in the world. Some passages stimulate your curiosity and make you question the veracity of many concepts out in the world; but as it expressed in the book. the choice is yours.

Read it over and over and over and over!!!

I have read this book over 20 times and have highlighted it, and have collected over 100 quotes from it. This book contains all the spiritual secrets you will ever need to become Self-Realized. Pure Genius!! Read it at least once a year. Read it to your kids, read it to your parents, read it to someone who is in the hospital. It is a very quick read and could possibly change the way you look at things.

About the Author
Stephen Mateo is originally from Toronto, Canada. He began his career as an actor, over twenty years ago, studying in Los Angeles. Stephen's acting career has been grounded in television and theater, landing co- starring roles on various sitcoms, and appearing Off-Broadway in the hit The Crumple Zone both in New York and Los Angeles. It was soon after that, that he decided to take hold of his career and began writing. Stephen wanted to write material that meant something to him, in a very personal way. In hopes that the stories would resonate with others, and encourage them to think about their own lives. He likes to develop characters that people relate to, or at least, can emotionally invest them selves in. Stephen's first attempt at this was a full-length screenplay titled, Dear John. Two things inspired him to write Dear John. First, he wanted to tell a story of love, to show people that the experience of finding love is no different, no matter whom you are. The second was freedom-the freedom to make our own decisions. Then Stephen decided to tell the story of Journey. Journey is a story of the lengths one will go to in search for freedom: the simultaneous desire to find our own place in the world, and the guilt we feel over separating ourselves from our family. I want to say to anyone who is reading this book is, "never give up on your dreams". This book is living proof that dreams do come true, not only for me the Author, but also for Tomas Castellano, the main character in this story. And if it weren't for his courage . . . there would be no JOURNEY.

Jouney - an amazing story!

I purchased this book not expecting a lot from it - new writer, first book. How good could it be - I thought. Let me tell you that I was unequivocally, 100% wrong!! Once I started reading, the story reached out, tugged at my heartstrings & wouldn't let go until I finished it. What an amazing, wonderful story! It made me cry several times & if I can say that about a book, it is awesome indeed.

Based on the life of Stephen Mateo's father, we are led from his childhood in the Canary Islands to the present day in the U.S. & Canada. Something his family was never aware of until the night before his 50th Wedding Anniversary. His journey shows his courage, his fortitude & his love of family but those are just words.

Do yourself a favor & buy this book - you can't go wrong & you won't be sorry. I'm so glad I went on this Journey!

Terrific Story

I thought "Journey" was a great summer read and have recommended it to others. Stephen Mateo's father gave him the gift of a wonderful, heartfelt and nail-biting true story that Stephen rendered beautifully on the page. I was impressed with the way Stephen evoked the Canary Islands and a time and place that was so specific to his father's own journey. I didn't know as much as I thought I knew about Franco's rule, and this book did a great job of filling in the blanks. Too, the pace of the book was great as I read from chapter to chapter and marveled at the travails his father went through as he left his family for a new life. I am so glad I read the book and can't wait for the movie version to be produced. Bravo, Stephen!

A wonderful Journey

Journey is a phenomenal adventure about a boy and his escape from the tyranny of the Francisco Franco dictatorship of the Canary Islands in the 1940's. The story also dives into issues of family, friendship, romance, and immigration. What I loved the most about Journey was how incredibly visual the story was. While reading it, I was able to see the tale unfold, as if a movie was playing in my mind. It was an easy read, and once I started, I was not able to put it down from cover to cover, reading the book in its entirety in just over 3 � hours. I HIGHLY recommend Journey for anyone who loves a good adventure story. I really loved it!

Another good value for the money.

I've used a couple of books from this series to shore up my CCIE weak points. Perfect for focused studies.

I personally picked up more from the IPv6 book than this book, mainly because I am weaker at IPv6 than switching. Still, it is a good option for focused studies on switching. I may not get the entire series, but I plan to get more books.

There are not many CCIE books out there that are current and reasonably priced. At about $0.01 per page, it is hard to beat.

Copy I have is for CCIEv4. Look forward to the CCIEv5 version.

exactly what it says - text book for dental field. Great shape came fast

A good textbook for dental students. It was in great shape and arrived really fast. It did have a bit of the hard to find information I was looking for. Unfortunately, the info I am looking for is not readily available. I think the info I am looking for is covered in labs and classes rather than in books. It helped and was written clearly. Lots of clear info well organized.

"Hope is not an investment strategy."

When it comes to money, do you play it by ear or plan ahead? Jean Chatzky, author of "Money Rules--The Simple Path to Lifelong Security," cites a startling statistic: "50 percent of people will run out of money in retirement." Chatzky, a financial editor and author, would like to insure that senior citizens who have worked all their lives will be comfortable during retirement. In this slender book, the author presents 94 succinct and straightforward rules about making and saving money, avoiding unnecessary debt, spending and investing wisely, and protecting your assets.

This is not a comprehensive manual about IRAs, estate planning, credit card regulations, stocks and bonds, and student loans. Many other works of non-fiction cover these topics. Chatzky's goal is to grab her readers by their lapels and startle them into making wise decisions in order to avoid unnecessary grief down the road. For instance, she urges us: Don't buy things you don't need; stay on top of bills; look for hidden expenses; save as much as possible for the future; shred documents that contain personal information; don't incur unnecessary debt.

"Money Rules" would be useful for individuals (especially the young and na�ve) who know little about monetary matters, tend to make rash purchases, and are reluctant to put aside funds for the proverbial rainy day. Chatzky, in a jargon-free, conversational style, warns us to avoid common pitfalls. For example, do not buy life insurance as an investment; "free" can be expensive; rebalance your portfolio periodically; don't lend money to friends and relatives. This handbook would be a good gift for a recent college graduate who is trying to land a job and taste financial independence for the first time. On the other hand, those who have their fiscal houses in order will find Chatzky's advice too elementary to be useful.

I wish I had had this book forty years ago!

I'm retired and living on a fixed pension, so at least one section ("Part 1 - Make Money") of this nifty little book doesn't apply to me unless I win the lottery, but I would dearly love to have read it forty years ago when I was out of school and beginning a career. The title is a bit of a double entendre, referring both to rules for making, saving, and keeping money; and how much influence the money we make and save will have on our lives, especially in retirement.

It's a short book, with 94 little nuggets of wisdom that will help most anyone make basic financial decisions. The book has seven sections:

Part 1 - Make Money
Part 2 - Save Money
Part 3 - Avoid (Most) Debt
Part 4 - Spend Wisely
Part 5 - Invest for Tomorrow
Part 6 - Cover Your Assets
Part 7 - Do's and Don'ts

A few of my favorite rules:

#11 - "If you can't see it and you can't touch it, you won't spend it." (On the importance of keeping most of your retirement savings where it's out of sight and not easy to withdraw, like a 401(k).)

#18 - "You will spend more with credit than with debit and more with debit than with cash."

#46 - "The salesperson is not your friend."

#84 - "Banking online makes you smarter and safer."

Most rules have a few words of explanation, although some rules are so self-explanatory that they need no clarification. Some of the rules should be obvious to most people, but I learned a lot of practical "tricks of the trade" for building and retaining wealth, such as when to do work around the house myself and when it makes sense to hire it out; why carrying larger-denomination currency saves money; how much debt parents or their kids should take on in student loans, and why parents' obligation to pay for their kids' college is limited; mood affects the amount people spend while shopping; and why it's harder to live within a budget while dieting.

I wouldn't say that "Money Rules" breaks any new ground, but it's one of the best and most readable books I've seen with so much down-to-earth practical advice about earning and managing your money in such a way as to ensure a comfortable retirement without any nasty surprises along the way.

And of course, never, ever, ever co-sign a loan with anyone, or loan money to friends or relatives. I had to learn those the hard way.

Some Great Advice, A Book Your Friend Might Actually Read

One of the hardest parts about recommending books is actually finding people interested in reading them. Money books are especially hard . . . while needed, they are often long, boring, and filled with advice that is impossible to follow. This book is an exception and is one that anyone can read in less than an hour. It might not help your non-reading friend become a millionaire, but it will give them easy to follow advice that can save and earn them money.

The author really succeeds at giving great psychological tips and tricks to help you save money without thinking about. Almost all of my favorite "rules" deal with these tips, some are listed below:

* Rule 19: Carry $100's instead of $20's.

* Rule 21: Save for something. Write down a specific goal, it will be easier.

* Rule 8: The more time you spend looking, the less happy you'll be.

* Rule 66: Ask "What's the worst that could happen?"

If you are looking for a solid financial book that will give you clear instructions on what to do next, then pick up I Will Teach You To Be Rich. It is the best I have ever read. If you are recommending a book to a friend who rarely reads, this is a great option. It will take them less than an hour and they will actually save money. A great investment for a ten spot.

This is a very helpful and up-to-date examination of both a brief history of the fairy tale and a brief history of the fairy tale scholars. The book delineates the various interpretations and emphases that fairy tale scholars and the collectors and writers of fairy tales have had since the 1600s with special emphasis on the ways the 18th and 19th centuries changed our perceptions of the tales and the way the 20th and 21st centuries have brought re-evaluations of the tales and differences in the way the tales are received both by the general public and by scholars in Europe and in the United States in particular. It explains in some detail the main theories about fairy tales and the main criticisms each theory has elicited. There is also an explanation of how the term fairy tale has been conceived by different scholars and by the public, how the term is generally perceived today, and the ways in which the fairy tale both differs from myth, legend, folktale, and tales of the fairies, and yet shares elements with them. All the prominent names and theories are included in some detail and the many less well-known scholars are brought to the reader's attention.

Clear Writing for a scholarly book

Most critical books contain so many obscure terms per sentence they are impossible to understand. This one is mostly in plain English. Will use for a reference for my own critical thesis for my MFA in writing for children.

Useless scholarly book that my professor had on her Other Books You Might Want list. It's dry and technical but seems to have little cogent to say. Unless you're required to get it, don't.
